Covid: 60 New Cases, Now 476 Active

March 31, 2021

The Ministry received 1660 test results and 60 were positive for Covid-19 — 1 classified as imported, 17 as local transmission with known contact and 42 as under investigation — so the island now has 476 active cases, with two people in hospital, one in critical care.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Health received 1660 test results since the last update, and 60 were positive for COVID-19. One of the new cases is classified as imported by a resident who arrived on Delta Airlines DL 617 from New York on 29 March 2021 and tested positive on their arrival test. 17 of the new cases are classified as local transmission with known contact as they are associated with known cases.

“The additional 42 new cases are classified as under investigation. These cases are among residents with no currently identified link to other known cases or history of travel in the past 14 days.

“Additionally, since the last update, there was one recovery.

“There are currently 476 active cases, of which;

  • 474 are under public health monitoring and;
  • Two are in the hospital, with one in critical care.

“Since March 2020, Bermuda has recorded 1217 total confirmed cases of COVID-19; out of those, 729 persons have recovered, and 12 persons have sadly succumbed to COVID-19.

“The mean age of all confirmed positive cases is 41 years [median: 39 years], and the ages range from less than one year to greater than 100 years.

“The mean age of all currently active cases is 38 years [median: 37 years], and the ages range from less than ten years [age group: 0-9 years] to greater than 80 years [age group: 80-100 years].

“Details will not be provided for the hospitalised cases to protect privacy and confidentiality.

“The mean age of all deceased cases is 75 years [median: 77 years], and the ages range from less than 60 years [age group: 50-59 years] to greater than 80 years [age group: 80-100 years].

“The source of all cases is as follows:

  • 242 are imported
  • 823 are classified as local transmission of which:
    • 731 are local transmission with known contact/source and
    • 92 are local transmission with an unknown contact/source
  • 152 are under investigation

“As investigations proceed, transmission categories may change. Today’s update has 13 cases moving from under investigation to local transmission with known contact/source.

“Of the over 190,000 test results reported, the mean age of all persons tested is 43 years [median:  42 years], and the ages range from less than one year to greater than 100 years.

“The seven-day average of our real-time reproduction number is 2.01.

“Bermuda’s current WHO country status is “Sporadic Cases”. However, Bermuda’s PAHO country status is “Community Transmission”.

“We are making excellent progress in vaccinating our population, and enthusiasm for the vaccine is increasing,” exclaimed Kim Wilson, JP, MP, Minister of Health. “However, we need to get as many people as possible vaccinated to stop the cycle of infections and re-infections leading to hospitalisations and death.”

“The more people vaccinated, the better control we have over the spread of this outbreak. If you have not registered to be vaccinated, I strongly urge you to do so today. We are in Phase 3 of our Vaccine Allocation Strategy, so everyone over the age of 16 is eligible to be vaccinated.”

“This Easter weekend, we must all exercise good judgement, behave sensibly and resist the urge to interact with people outside of our immediate household. Please be patient. Now is not the time to let our guard down for the sake of social get-togethers, parties and gatherings that risk everyone’s safety.”

“Remember Bermuda – stay in your household bubble at all times, especially this Easter weekend.

  • If kite flying, stay within your household bubble. Your household bubble comprises the people you live with only.
  • If possible, enjoy kite flying from your property.
  • If kite flying from a park or recreation area, stay within your household bubble. Do not mix with others at the same park.
  • Do not visit with, or invite to visit, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, etc., to mix with you at all. Even if you plan a family activity outdoors, I cannot stress enough – No Mixing Of Households.
  • Continue to wear a mask, physically distance from others and practice good hand hygiene at all times – even if you are immunised. As I said earlier, being immunised does not mean that you cannot get the virus.
  • Be aware of the symptoms, which are easily associated with allergies – sore throat, tiredness and headaches, coughing and sneezing.

“I will remind the public that if you are in quarantine, you must stay put. And if you have symptoms related to COVID, please contact your GP. Please do not show up at their office. You must call first. Let them know that you are symptomatic and in quarantine.”

“Each of us has a role to play in stopping the spread of the coronavirus. Follow Public Health guidelines, wear a mask, practice good hand hygiene, maintain physical distance and download the WeHealth Bermuda app. If you haven’t already, register to get vaccinated.”

  1. Unbelievable says:

Lol it’s not funny but the anti-science/anti-reality folks should get vaccinated. I’m going to start calling you lot “Anti’s”.
Actually I wonder how many Anti’s actually got Covid? With this 3rd wave, I’m certain there have been a few in Bermuda.

I got my 2nd dose this morning. So far no side effects. Even did a Zoom gym class a little while ago. I’ll update as we go along. I’m sure the Anti’s want to know since so many of them are anti just for the sake of being anti. Or maybe they are just chicken.

    • Smh.. says:

Only a dumb a$$ thinks he won’t get infected because he got a shot. Oh sorry I forgot your a guinea pig. If your vaccine is so bullet proof then why are you worrying about the rest of us????

      • Unbelievable says:

Oh boy I seem to have touched a nerve with the Anti’s while they get their bits of fiction mixed up.

      • Im surrounded by idiots says:

Firstly, you’re getting the vaccine to prevent mild/severe symptoms from occurring so that, you know, you don’t die. Secondly, only a bigot like yourself thinks they’re better off without the vaccine, you’re probably the one blowing off COVID restrictions and putting others at risk, which is why there’s a third wave in the first place. Keep thinking you’re invincible.

Some Bermudians do not possess the ability to think critically and you’re a perfect example of that.

    • Bermybud says:

Its their body! Get a grip!

      • sandgrownan says:

Ah, yes it is, but…..by not getting vaccinated, they increase MY risk. So, they can do whatever the F they like but stay away from the office, school, supermarkets, the beach, everywhere…..

So, it’s not about personal choice, it’s about collective responsibility.

        • Bermybud says:

Can u give me living proof that the vax works? Until then i will do my collective responsibility! Cuz u know full well its to early to give proper scientific evidence about a mrna vax that works! Fact! Its only been around for 3 months! Good night!

        • Mark says:

No. It’s all about your Government’s scare tactics. You are just as much a walking petri dish as a non-vacinnated person. Perhaps your side effect was stupidity??

        • Joe Bloggs says:

Forget it, Sandgrownan. Some people are QANON supporters and will never accept the science.

Indeed, it is likely that people like SMH will never even get tested, so COVID-19 will be around a lot longer than necessary simply because certain people will not accept the science

        • LOL (original) says:

Then you could leave if your that scared.

LOL two can play at that.

          • sandgrownan says:

            you’re not your.

For christ’s sake, if you are going to troll at least get the spelling correct.

            • Joe Bloggs says:

Clearly LOL did not go to Whitney Institute!

              • LOL (original) says:

Just new to Trolling I guess. Heat of the moment type of thing. After all this guy is cool with taking away my rights for his. Wars are fought over that type of thing.

                LOL

        • Dejavu says:

Your only at risk if your unhealthy, so people like yourself need to be vaccinated while the rest of us need to be left alone

          • sandgrownan says:

            Well no, that’s factually incorrect.

But, that’s fine, if you don’t want to be vaccinated. Do not come to my office, store, school, club, beach, house…do you understand?

            • LOL (original) says:

Answer this. Doctors are telling people for certain medical conditions that they should not get it. By what you say here you could give a f’ about their situation.

LOL “But, that’s fine, if you don’t want to be vaccinated. Do not come to my office, store, school, club, beach, house…do you understand?” What’s the difference between you and a supremacist fascist? For real let all the readers know.

        • trufth says:

What are you worried about? You stood in line like a good guinea pig and got your shots right? Mind your business and carry on. You have a magic shield now, right??

          • sandgrownan says:

I am staggered by the amount of absolute breathtaking stupidity on display in these comments. What on earht are you talking about?

I shouldn’t be though, this is the Island that gave us 20 years of PLP failure.

            • LOL (original) says:

“Earth” I mean come on man…….

              LOL spelling errors happen init.

            • LOL (original) says:

Not at you directly but I agree there is stupidity on here but we differ on whom it’s coming from.

              LOL…..Yup, sandgrownan it’s just unbelievable init ….
with your level of intellect, persuasiveness and you’ll persuade many. Maybe you should run for government as you know better what’s good for everyone don’t you. In fact once you’re in power you could institute a breeding license so you can control the gene pool world would be a better place right?, Right? W power right? please here up and live somewhere else like China

            • LOL says:

It’s earth not earht. I mean come on man.

              LOL

              • saud says:

You know you’re a pathetic loser when all you can do is point out a typo.

              • sandgrownan says:

                Touche

      • Unbelievable says:

Yes that’s right, people should do whatever they want with their bodies. I believe that.

At the same time, you also need to realise there are people who want to get vaccinated. They see and read the science and they don’t believe in any FB, conspiracy, petri-dish, Bill Dates, Govt control nonsense.

If they decide to get vaccinated, that’s their business and you need to respect that too. If you’re going to come on here and talk about the silliness you read on Facebook from some random link that someone posted, vaccinated people are going to come on here too and promote the benefits of getting vaccinated. Nothing you can do about it.

        • 2020 Won says:

Honestly, if these clowns haven’t learnt by now that being a valued and productive member of a society involves looking out for the welfare of others, I don’t think anything you say is going to affect them.

Their version of society starts to look a lot like Texas in a snow storm.

    • Bob says:

Congratulations for receiving your full dose of poison. Lets see years down the road what will happen to you now.

    • Dirk Gentley says:

Oh, you get the vaccination Gold Star!

    • Wow says:

Why do you care so much whether people get the jabs or not? You seem to have an unhealthy obsession. How about you mind your own business and move on??

      • sandgrownan says:

It’s called collective responsibility. But, hey, it’s Bermuda so the “anti-vax it’s my choice” brigade are of no surprise to me.

      • Unbelievable says:

Lol all this uninformed anger about getting vaccinated. If you lot can’t read my original post as a) some humour (clearly some people feel more important than others) and most importantly b) a request that you take collective responsibility. I got vaccinated because I don’t want to get Covid and if by chance I do get it, I don’t want to give it anyone else most importantly, my family. Maybe some of you live in a silo.

If you’re so worried about your personal freedoms and staying”woke”, don’t come crying to me when they don’t allow you on a plane because you are hard headed. I’ll just walk right past you at the LF Wade’s Departure Lounge line and get on my plane.

    • LOL (original) says:

K Ill just refer to you as a supremisist.

      LOL….

      • saud says:

        ” supremisist “

      • Unbelievable says:

You are grasping at straws, son. Your false equivalencies fall apart at every turn. Nothing in my post is supremacist. You just want to play that card because you have no come back and choose to be ignorant.

But I’ll refer to as someone in need of education. “Supremisist”? Jesus help us.

        • LOL (original) says:

Yet my points still stand “son”. You might want to look at the argument for it’s merits not once you or anyone else on here have disproved or even factually refuted them. Was it Saud that proved above that by his own words that they are a “pathetic loser”? Then their is you who reads a paper (NYtimes) that once may have been an ok source but has recently admitted in court that their news in just opinion.

LOL try attacking the argument I didn’t go to ad hominem attacks until you all did. My bad. Show me I’m wrong.

  2. puzzled says:

Or maybe they just don’t give a sh(* about Aunty …

    • Bermybud says:

You didnt give a s%*& when aunty was dead from the flu!

  3. Chris says:

How about people stop going to grocery stores and pharmacies to browse around and buy not needed unhealthy snacks? Do people understand that they putting workers at risk? Workers don’t get extra pay to cope during a pandemic .

    • Smh says:

You sound like you have a job. Not surprised about comments like this becuase you only care as long as the economy is working out in your favor.

      • Mark says:

All the unnecessary testing is working out in favour od somebody’s wallet.

      • Yup says:

Some of us are doing great during the Pandemic as we saved for a rainy day and grow our own vegetables etc. Enjoying working from home!

        • Why the Hate? says:

seriously? not everyone was in a position to save for a rainy day. 2. Those who did save for a rainy day, used up their money. 3. not everyone has a yard of their own, it’s too small, too concreted, or too restricted by their landlord. 4. Not everyone has an office job, or other comparable job, that they can work from home.

          • Yup says:

Awww that’s too bad! I did without early on in my life so I could save for later! This endeth the lesson!

      • LOL (original) says:

+1 these people telling others to get vaccinated don’t real care about people they only care about themselves. The person Sandgrownan (ya I’m calling you out) doesn’t want people who will not or can’t (like my spouse) to be dropped out of society. How very atheist of him/her or what ever nonsense pronoun (insert here).

LOL let look at the worlds most famous of them Mo, Stalin, Marx whose ideology is responsible for more death than all world wars combined. Why should people listen to these people?

        • sandgrownan says:

There it is, the most stupid thing I’ve read all day!

          • LOL (original) says:

Sorry what part isn’t true? I did spell Mao tse-tung wrong maybe that is as far as your fact checking goes.

            LOL

  4. Rules says:

It is ones right, not to get vaccinated.

But can we have days for those vaccinated only. I don’t want to have to worry about being next to those unvaccinated folks in the grocery store, gas station, bank, ……; who think that they are smarter and wiser than the brilliant scientists and researchers who spent years studying science.

It is their choice not to get vaccinated, but please don’t make us suffer for their ill informed decisions.

I have one question for those who are not getting the vaccination, if you were dying from cancer would you get chemo to save your life? I don’t get why some medicine is okay and some isn’t? Is it that you only care about saving your own life?

    • Hmmmm says:

I don’t usually respond to these things. Your final paragraph speaks volumes, in the first instance COVID is not cancer and most people don’t have it. So why should they have to vaccinate and risk getting side effects that could kill when they weren’t even sick to start. Secondly, medicine should be for the sick or sickness and it doesn’t have to be Big pharma there are plenty of natural remedies that cost less and won’t make Big pharma rich. Follow the hand washing, mask, and distance protocols. Some folks already have strong immune systems. Not everyone is going to get this disease and the overwhelming majority will survive.
On another note, I also think there should be vaccine options not everyone wants mRNA. When will Johnson and Johnson get here?
Take care of yourself. Do what you must to feel safe short of attacking/judging other people who are doing what they must to feel safe.

  5. Fisherman says:

Vaccinations, listened to a doctor who said everyone needs to be vaccinated. Yet, side affects are anything that isn,t good. Heart problems could get worse, swelling in arm could get worse and other. I live with an arm that swells daily, why would I get vaccinated to make my situation worse. At one question, the doctor responded, please speak to your doctor. How many can afford to go to doctor??? To thine own self be true!!

    • Joe Bloggs says:

Every medication has *potential* side effects. If you are going to avoid medication because of potential side effects I suggest you find an uninhabited island to live on and move there.

      • Fisherman says:

I can live anywhere I want here in Bermuda. Presently living on one of our Islands, have also lived on two other of our Islands. So sorry that you are living land locked.
I was merely sharing information and my opinion. Then too, should I not get vaccine my decision and my body. In the meantime, doung everything as outlined by Health Minister as are all level headed neighbors and my Community.

  6. Why the Hate? says:

To those who think this covid19 pandemic is not really bad (maybe not bad for us in this well develooed part of the world), some of us have family in much poorer countries who are desperately sick with covid19 under a failing medical system, suffering the worse ever financial crisis without any financial safety net. The covid19 pandemic and the effects is real. And they would gladly get vaccinated but can’t because only 5% of the population can get vaccinated at the moment while the delivery system for the vaccine is filled with corruption. to see comments downing the effects of covid19 pandemic is so unreal.

  7. The Truth says:

Think critically. Take emotions out of it.
    66 positives out 1660 tests = 3%
    75 positives out of 2151 = 3%
    100+ out of 3000+ test = 3%
I can go on and on…
    1292 out 200,507 tests (Since March 2020) = 1%

At any given moment we can deduce if the whole population was tested at once, 1500-1800 would come back positive.

    COVID is real…yes
Has there been a slight uptick…yes (of 2%)
Should we live with head in the sand…no.

But this is all about narrative building, a narrative based on fear with disingenuous charting and graphing. The need to constantly test so that numbers will look fearfully high. The end game is to get 70% of this country vaccinated which I’m not rallying. It’s just something every individual should make a personally well-informed decision on.

Pay attention to the the narrative 2-4 weeks after April 6? Why April 6? That’s when the next shipment of vaccines. If we look headed toward achieving that 70%, observe whether or not the narrative shifts. If it doesn’t shift, pay attention to why. Go back to the numbers.

Listen carefully and think critically…without emotion… to what is being said in the press conferences and the truth will reveal itself.

    Avoid fear if you can.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

      A “slight uptick”?

Going from fewer than 20 active cases to 537 active cases is a “slight uptick”? See https://bernews.com/2021/04/covid-75-new-positive-537-active-5-in-hospital/

This “slight uptick” is a consequence of Bermudians not paying attention or following the rules. Thanks to those who will not follow the rules, we can no longer have Sunday morning breakfast with extended family or take our spouse or children out to dinner.

That is the price I must pay for the folly of others.

      • Joe Bloggs says:

UPDATE: yesterday gave us 108 new cases, 22 local transmission with known contact and 86 under investigation. There are currently 630 active cases, with 18 people in hospital, 4 in critical care.

        See https://bernews.com/2021/04/108-new-630-active-18-in-hospital-4-in-icu/

Do you stand by your “slight uptick” comment?

In Bermuda this is NOT ‘all about narrative building, a narrative based on fear with disingenuous charting and graphing’.

This is about public health and when Bermuda might return to “normal”, whatever that is

  8. Fisherman says:

I can live anywhere I want here in Bermuda. Presently living on one of our Islands, have also lived on two other of our Islands. So sorry that you are living land locked.
I was merely sharing information and my opinion. Then too, should I not get vaccine my decision and my body. In the meantime, doing everything as outlined by Health Minister as are all level headed neighbors in my Community.

  9. Common Sense says:

I think that when this is all over, everyone will have either had the disease or the vaccine. Everyone should look at all the evidence and make their decision after balancing the risks of each action against the benefits. The evidence does show that the adverse effects of the vaccine are uncommon and/or not severe while the short term and long term consequenses of getting Covid are life threatening and/or changing. We now have 22 people who are ill enough to be admitted to hospital and 2 have recently died. Vaccines have saved more lives world wide than almost all medical modalities.

  10. Why are the airport not shutting down. I work in a restaurant. The number of people I have had to turn away. No vaccine , not had the covid test either day 4 or 8 or 14.
Are people that stupid they think they are super people, the covid stops at them.
Meanwhile they are putting me and my staff at risk. I have grand children to think about. I have had my 2 shots. I still do not feel safe with all these CRAZY
    peoples walking around

    GO FIGURE
