Firefighters Extinguish Fire In Kitchen At MAWI

Firefighters extinguished a fire in the kitchen at the Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute this evening [April 5].

A BFRS spokesperson said, “At 8:49pm on Monday April 5th 2021, Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service dispatch received a report of smoke and flames seen coming out of the kitchen at the Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute in Devonshire.

“BFRS responded with one appliance from Hamilton Station and one from the Port Royal Station and a total of eight firefighters.

“On arrival fire crews saw thick black smoke and flames bellowing out of the kitchen on the lower level of MAWI. Firefighters quickly entered the kitchen area wearing self contained breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze using water from the fire appliance.

“After the fire was extinguished, the kitchen was ventilated in order to remove the smoke. The fire was in found to be in a freezer. The cause of the fire is under investigation by a Fire Service investigator.”
