US Coast Guard Tall Ship Eagle To Visit Bermuda
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle is scheduled to arrive in Bermuda on Saturday [July 10] as part of its 2021 summer training deployment.
A spokesperson said, “The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle [WIX 327], ‘America’s Tall Ship,’ is scheduled to arrive in Bermuda on Saturday, July 10th as part of its 2021 summer training deployment. The ship will be moored along Front Street in Hamilton, July 10 – July 14 and will be open for free public tours with social distancing in place on the following dates and times:
- Sunday, July 11, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
- Monday, July 12, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
- Tuesday, July 13, 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.
“While in port, cadets and crew from the Eagle will participate in community outreach activities with the Royal Bermuda Regiment, Bermuda National Trust, and Bermuda Sloop Foundation.
“At 90 meters [295 feet] in length, Eagle is the largest tall ship flying the stars and stripes and the only active square-rigger in United States government service. Eagle has served as a classroom at sea to future Coast Guard officers since 1946, offering an at-sea leadership and professional development experience as part of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy curriculum.
“Eagle is a three-masted barque with more than 6,797 square meters [22,300 square feet] of sail and 9.7 Kilometers [6 miles] of rigging. It was constructed in 1936 by the Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany. Originally commissioned as the Horst Wessel by the German navy, Eagle was a war reparation for the United States following World War II.
