“Call For A General Strike Is Most Unfortunate”
The Government confirmed they received an “ultimatum letter” from the BIU President which said that if the Government ”refuses to make the necessary amendments” to the legislation they will be “calling on its membership for a two day shutdown” which will take effect August 30.
A Government spokesperson stated: “The Government of Bermuda can confirm that on August 19, 2021, the Premier of Bermuda received an ultimatum letter from the President of the Bermuda Industrial Union Chris Furbert.
“The letter stated:
“The BIU is giving the Bermuda Government eleven [11] days’ notice for the Minister of Labour to make certain amendments to Section 57: Cancellation of Certification under the Trade Union and Labour Relations [Consolidation] Act 2021 and if he refuses to make the necessary amendments the BIU’s General Council is calling on its membership for a two [2] day shutdown”
The two day shut will take effect August 30, 31 2021. The motion also includes that failure of the Government to make the necessary amendments to the 2021 Act then the Premier the Hon. David Burt and Minister of Labour, the Hon. Jason Hayward need to step down.
“The Government of Bermuda would like to make its position clear. The call for a General strike is most unfortunate and unnecessary,” a spokesperson said.
“The Government stands firm in its position that the Trade Union and Labour Relations [Consolidation] Act 2021 is fair and just. The Government has no intention of amending the legislation.”
Call them bluff
Chris Furbert needs to resign.
Totally agree! All that we have been through these past 18 months! Shutting down the island should NOT be an option!
never ever thought i would say this but current government. HOLD STRONG>DO NOT BEND DO NOT BREAK. Other than to break C Furbutts stranglehold on the island. I for one am not one of his little ferrets.
I agree! Were already partially crippled so is a good time to stand our ground and turn the tables on the union to make them the ones who suffer . Let them strike so the union can support them …. we’ll see how long they last !
How about a general strike against the governments tyrannical behavior against the people of Bermuda with its quarantine mandates and coercing people/ That is a heck of a lot more important than some union certification. That is way more urgent. BIU & people of Bermuda this is not a joke please get your priorities in order. You have been warned!
How about a general strike against abject stupidity and bizarre ignorance !
Get a grip or move to Texas!
Call their bluff it isn’t like things could get worse. Trash does not get collected, busses do not run, roads do not get paved etc etc. Please do not pay them for illegal strikes because we are broke and they need to be made to understand what that means.
Precisely, who is going to know the difference?
Bermudastan coming up.
Stay safe.
Really? How much more nonsense can we take from these numpties? This union ruins our country and im tired of it. Time to march against the union!
Just because the Union request that its members support a particular party des not mean they will get everything they want. Sorry. Let them call the General Strike. Folks do not get paid in this climate if they strike. They used to but no way the Government can continue this nonsense. Call the strike. When it fails the President of the Union will need to do what’s right: RESIGN. We have had enough of such tactics. If he does not support the PLp in the next election…if he is still there….so be it. Enough is enough.
Funny how when the union takes action against the previous government it is some how just? but now when they want to take action against the current government they are wrong? Please!! This government needs to stop playing politics only when it suits them! Stop the double standards. This government is so arrogant they think that everything they do is right.
The union does not in anyway have the peoples support on this let it happen ,fire Chris ,send Direk over with a bottle of swizzle
This union is run by idiots.
They are determined to cripple this island.
Bermuda is trying so hard to get back on its feet. Then the BIU want to call a general strike.
GET RID OF THE BIU/
PREMIER BURT PLEASE CALL THEIR BLUFF AND SEND THESE IDIOTS PACKING.
I have a question who runs the country, my country… the Bermuda Government or Chris Furbert and the BIU. Stand strong Bermuda Government and do not let these individuals run this country.
A house divided can’t stand. PLP is either pro union, labor and people or not. Can you hear me now? We need people like Chris. Thanks Chris and the union.
So you are saying that Chris is a good thing?
This govt won’t stand strong, scared he’ll lose votes.
“This govt won’t stand strong, scared he’ll lose votes.”
To who? The OBA? The Monster Raving Loony Party? A bunch of independents?
Show me one unionized public service that is more productive and efficient than a non unionized private service. Education bwahaha? Works and Engineering bwahaha? Postal ‘Service’ bwahaha? I’ll wait. Time for government to call the pokerman’s bluff.
Question. Could I as Joe Public launch a countersuit against the Union Leaders for infringement on my rites/privaledge to WORK and actually get paid for my normal life and not be impacted by their crap. I for one am tired of it.Any good lawyers willing to take this? I would start with the 6$ figure leader et al
In full support !! Ernie Burt & The Sesame Street Politricks need help
How many of those folks protesting against the Union are Union members? Perhaps they are getting fed up with the lack of union benefits they should be receiving. Maybe they are now ‘seeing the light’ …… do tell ….
The Union insisted non members pay dues for bargaining awards. Now said non members are entitled to a vote. It’s like a family paying a collective mortgage, just because one doesn’t reside in the home while the other do, doesn’t mean they are not entitled to have an opinion on the color the house will be painted. I pay,I have a say, point blank!
