Sailors Continue Competing In Rhode Island

September 17, 2021

Sailors competing in the 2021 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup including the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Sailing Team faced a challenging day on the water.

The fleet had periods of a wave, a shift, a patch of no wind, a trench of disturbed air, a picket fence of competitors on starboard tack.

The Bermuda boat skippered by James Macdonald, along with his crew Jon Corless, Tom Miller, Lexa Macdonald, Jeff Roach, Walter Smith, Paul Watson, and Alison Hill, remain in last place in the 19 boat fleet.

Macdonald and his crew finished the first race in 19th place, they then finished in 18th in the second race, and finished 18th in the final race of the day.

Macdonald and his crew have 148 points, while the Southern Yacht Club boat skippered by John Lovell representing the USA continues as the leader with 28 points.

Another Bermudian sailor is also competing in the event, Lance Fraser, tactician for Royal Canadian Yacht Club said, “The boats are amazing, it’s frustratingly close racing. Every inch matters, every tack matters, every shift matters. If you end up on the wrong side of a few things, you get deep and it’s really hard to get back. We’ve had an OK regatta so far, we need to keep pushing, basically no more mistakes at this point.”
