Former Police Commissioner Says Thank You

October 4, 2021

Police Commissioner Stephen Corbishley Bermuda July 2020Former Police Commissioner Stephen Corbishley has offered a message of thanks following his resignation earlier this month.

Mr Corbishley previously served with Kent Police in the UK, was appointed as Bermuda’s Police Commissioner in May 2018, and at that time, it was said he was appointed for a 5 year term.

On October 1st, Governor Rena Lalgie said, “Commissioner of Police Mr. Stephen Corbishley has tendered his resignation, which I have accepted with immediate effect. I wish Mr. Corbishley well in his future career.

“An open, merit based and fair process will commence as soon as possible to recruit the next Commissioner of Police. In the intervening period, I will be appointing Mr Darrin Simons as Acting Commissioner and Superintendent Na’imah Astwood as Acting Deputy Commissioner.

“I have had the pleasure of meeting men and women within the Bermuda Police Service who are dedicated professionals, committed to meeting the highest policing standards and are passionate about serving the people of Bermuda. I am extremely grateful to those who step forward to do what is, at the best of times, a difficult job and is even more so in this unprecedented period.” the Governor stated.

In a post on social media following the confirmation of his resignation, Mr. Corbishley said, “A short post to say thank you for many nice comments I have received over the past 24 hours. I am humbled by some of the messages and was privileged to be given the opportunity to do my role.

“Whilst Bermuda faces many challenges within this ongoing pandemic, it remains a truly beautiful place and I have loved every minute being part of its community; even with my terrible jokes and misunderstanding on my first weekend on the rock with a massive guy who asked me if I had a side piece to which I thought he was talking about me having a police issue firearm, leaving us both very confused.

“Have a great weekend everyone, stay safe and look after each other as we are one big family irrespective of where we come from.”
