Oct 29: Evolution To Host Stroke Day Event

October 27, 2021

Evolution Healing Centre will be holding a drop-in event on the topic of strokes on Friday [Oct 29] from 2.00pm to 4.00pm.

A spokesperson said, “A stroke is a life-threatening event where either a blood clot [ischemic attack] or a bleed [haemorrhage] which causes damage to the brain.

“Last year in Bermuda, 261 people had a stroke incident, which equates to approximately five incidences a week. Additionally, roughly seven people a week experienced a transient ischemic attack. Although a transient attack usually lasts only a few minutes and often does not cause permanent damage, these ‘ministrokes’ may be a warning sign.

“Each year, the World Stroke Association hosts an event to raise awareness of this life threatening condition, since strokes are the second highest cause of death in the world and the leading cause of disability.

“In 2021, the Association will focus on the signs and symptoms of a stroke. Spotting the signs and knowing how to react to help your family and friends could be crucial. Quick responses are key, as every second counts towards saving someone’s life and reducing damage.

“Remember to ‘think FAST’.

“These signs are FAST: Face – is the face drooping? Arms – is there any arm weakness? Speech – are there any speech difficulties or slurring? Time – it is time to call 911.

“Having a stroke is a life changing event for not only those who survive it, but their family and friends as well. Many people find their rehabilitation journey post stroke challenging and we want to support you through this difficult time.

“Your rehabilitation may involve seeing a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, clinical psychologist, dietician, and medical support. It may also be helpful to receive information regarding medication management, lifestyle changes, or longer-term prevention strategies.

“As a community, it is crucial that we support and fund rehabilitation in Bermuda. With this in mind, we are pleased to host a drop-in event at Evolution Healing Centre, 25 Point Finger Road, Hamilton on Friday 29th October. The event will run from 2-4 pm.

“We invite you to visit us to celebrate your milestones, share your stories and connect with one another.

“On hand to help will be Senior Physiotherapists Kim Watkins and Sandro Fubler from Evolution Healing Centre, along with Clinical Psychologist Dr Susan Adehamar, and Senior Speech and Language Pathologist Kimberly McIvor to answer any questions you may have. We look forward to meeting you.”
