Photos: Athletes Honoured At Sports Awards
[Updated] The Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation held the Annual Sports Awards last night [March 12] at the Hamilton Princess, with the island’s top athletes, officials and supporters being recognized for their contribution to sports.
Dame Flora Duffy — who won the island’s first ever Olympic gold medal — was named the Female Athlete of the Year, Jah-Nhai Perinchief was named the Male Athlete of Year, Sebastian Kempe was named the Junior Male Athlete of the Year, while Caitlyn Bobb was named the Junior Female Athlete of the Year. There were a number of other awards given, we will update later, and in the meantime a photo gallery is below.
Update 6.47pm: OBA Shadow Minister of Sport Ben Smith said, “Attending the 40th Sports award dinner on Saturday night was an amazing opportunity to celebrate the many accomplishments that Bermuda has in sports. It has been a couple of years since the awards night has happened and even though the effects of Covid on sports is still evident it was great to reward our athletes for their perseverance through tough times.
“Our athletes continue to make us proud and set the example of what we can be as a country with hard work and dedication.
“Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who is involved in sports. Every day that we work with young people to guide them in a positive direction is a step forward for our country.
“The community present at the event consisting of parents, coaches, officials, and athletes is the example that we need to continue to highlight.”
“The mask guidance here must be continued to be followed at all times”
“Masks are required in (but not limited to) the following situations:
In crowded places (indoors and outdoors) where you cannot maintain an appropriate physical distance of 6 feet (2 meters) from others who are not from your own household or whose immunisation status is unknown.”
All of this is current Bermuda government regulations.
If the Premier and senior government members can’t be bothered to follow the regulations, why should the rest of us? Do away with this charade. Immediately. It’s ridiculoys.
