WindReach To Auction Painted Horse Sculptures

March 29, 2022

Life-size painted sculptures of a much-loved therapy horse will be auctioned off at a fundraising event at WindReach next month.

Tilly, a miniature pony, died in November last year after almost a quarter of a century helping others, having been donated to the Warwick-based outdoor activities centre in 1997.

The fibre-glass sculptures, of which there are 20, have been painted and decorated by well-known local artists such as Meredith Andrews, Lee Petty, Jahbarri Wilson and Shanna Hollis, as well as WindReach participants.

Tilly’s Filly Fundraiser will be held at WindReach on Friday, April 29, at 7.15 pm, with all funds raised supporting the facility’s educational and therapeutic programmes.

Tina Nash, the WindReach executive director, described Tilly as a “pillar of our therapeutic community” and a gentle teacher to many of their participants.

She told Bernews: “Tilly’s mild temperament helped thousands of WindReach participants build confidence and self-esteem; enhance their communication skills and experience the physical benefits of improved balance, core strength and coordination. The empathy and compassion built with such animal therapy is immeasurable.

“At WindReach we explore animal therapy programmes, which are immersive. Participants not only ride, they groom the horses and feed the goats, sheep, rabbits and other animals. This helps with sensory challenges and leads to greater independence and the ability to navigate the world in which we live.”

Ms Nash said the spirit of Tilly will live on through the replica sculptures and bring “fond memories and some solace”.

She added: “We were devasted to lose Tilly last year. We are so grateful to all the artists for creating a legacy for her.

“We look forward to residents and visitors enjoying these special embellished sculptures and generously supporting the auction on April 29. We also invite the public to use #WindReachBermuda when taking pictures and posting them to social media.”

Tilly’s Fillies will also be on display at the Church Street level of Washington Mall from April 8 to April 27

Tickets to the fundraiser are $25 per person, including registration for the auction. For enquiries and entry sales, email TillyFillyAuction@WindReach.bm or call 505-7878. To donate, visit www.windreach.bm.
