Photos/Video: Bermuda Triangle Point Plaque

July 6, 2022

The City announced “spectacular upgrades” at the Albuoy’s Point area, including officially marking a spot as the northern point of the Bermuda Triangle; a bronze plaque has been placed in the area, along with a QR code that, when scanned, will show an informative video.

Speaking at the unveiling last night, Councillor John Harvey said, “Today, on behalf of the Mayor and City Council, I am thrilled to announce that the City of Hamilton has completed some truly spectacular upgrades here at the Albuoy’s Point area…as you can see.

“The upgrades included improved seating and shade, re-grassing of the entire area, up-lighting the trees and revitalization of the pedestrian areas and waterfront.

“Additionally, the waterside steps leading down to the lower dock have been widened to improve access for mariners and there has been an upgrade to the area’s electrical supply which will expand opportunities for the park as a dynamic event space.

“The Jervis Bay Memorial has also been relocated to a better place of prominence within the park. The Memorial honours the memory of the Men of H.M.S. Jervis Bay who gave their lives in action against a German raider in the North Atlantic on November 5th, 1940, to protect the 37 ships under their care.

“We have also relocated – and fabricated a new plinth for – the Bill Ming sculpture, Against da Tide, which previously occupied the sidewalk at the entrance to the former Bank of Bermuda building on Front Street. HSBC Bank Bermuda Limited commissioned Against da Tide as a public art sculpture which is one of timeless and contemporary design with historical reference to both Bermuda and its people. Mr. Ming perceived the craft not only as a vessel of transport but also a metaphor for survival.

“I would like to thank those members of the Parks Department staff who worked exceptionally hard to complete this project.

“Today I am excited to talk about the next phase of this project. You may have noticed that the walkway in the park is triangular in shape. This design hints at what I am about to unveil here today…

“We have all heard the legend of the Bermuda Triangle – missing airplanes, empty vessels, and sailors never to be seen again…for more than half a century the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle has fascinated the world.

“The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil’s Triangle, is a region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have gone missing under mysterious circumstances. The three ‘points’ of the triangle are Miami; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and, of course, Bermuda.

“And whether the Bermuda Triangle a manufactured mystery or a paranormal force at work, there is no doubt that it’s fascinating topic…and is also often one of the things we are associated with, second perhaps to Bermuda shorts!

“That has led to our announcement today, the City of Hamilton will officially mark this spot here at Albuoy’s Point as the Northern point of the Bermuda Triangle.

“We have set a bronze plaque in the ground officially marking this location, to create a point of interest in the park and added tourist attraction.

“It also provides an educational opportunity. You will see that, to the side of that plaque, we have installed a QR Code sign. This is similar to the QR Codes we installed along Freedom Square last year. You just scan your phone or device over the code and an informative video pops up about the Bermuda Triangle – voiced by our own Town Crier Ed Christopher.

“This Albuoy’s Point project is one of three major infrastructure projects the City has undertaken recently – the other two being the complete renovation of Pier 6 and an overhaul of Washington Lane.

“At the City of Hamilton, we are constantly striving to find new ways to add to the vibrancy of the City, so that we continue to attract visitors and provide attractive, engaging spaces for our visitors and residents to enjoy.”

Wow! Finally something is made of what Bermuda is by far best known for. The Bermuda Triangle.

Guaranteed, the first question coming out of the mouth of someone learning that you are from Bermuda is about The Bermuda Triangle.

Trinket shops should be full of triangle stuff.
