Govt: Hurricane, Buses, Schools, Roads & More

September 23, 2022

A determination on the resumption of bus service will be made later today, ferry service is suspended until tomorrow, the Causeway is open and the airport will reopen later today, Government said.

A Government spokesperson said, “With the passage of Hurricane Fiona, and following an Emergency Measures Organisation [EMO] meeting earlier this afternoon, the Minister of National Security, Michael Weeks provided the following.”

Minister Weeks said, “By all accounts, we had a very long night and some very tense moments during the early morning hours. But in true Bermuda resilience fashion, we withstood the effects of Hurricane Fiona and thankfully, there was no loss of life or serious injuries.

“Bermuda was fortunate during this incredibly serious and dangerous Category 4 hurricane, compared to other countries in Fiona’s wake. And we consider this a true testament to our readiness and preparedness.

EMO Post Hurricane Fiona Bermuda Sept 2022

“At this stage, I can advise that our EMO utility crews, the Royal Bermuda Regiment, Parks Department and Works and Engineering have conducted the necessary assessments, clearance and restoration works to ensure that Bermuda is back up and running.

“I am pleased to confirm that all the major thoroughfares/roadways are clear for passage, with the exception the following roads, which should be avoided:

  • South Road, McGalls Hill to St. Marks Road
  • Berry Hill Road

“There are also some minor roads that still have obstructions and the public is encouraged to use caution as they travel around.

“I can confirm that the Causeway is open and clear.

“There are work crews that are working in some areas to deal with downed branches, trees and powerlines, and in that regard, we are asking the public to please slow down when they pass our work crews.

“As it relates to the airport, it will reopen later today, however there are commercial flights scheduled for today. Travellers are encouraged to check their respective airlines.

“There were no major incidents reported at the Lamb Foggo Urgent Care Facility.

“Public schools are being assessed. The DPT is assessing bus routes and a determination on the resumption of service will be decided later today. Ferry service is suspended until tomorrow. Government’s public buildings are also being assessed with the expectation of normal services on Monday.

“We are aware that there are significant power outages across the island. As of 3.00 p.m. today there were around 19,000 residents without electricity. This is down from 29,000 from earlier this morning. This is a remarkable feat. And I have been assured that BELCO is actively conducting their restoration works, and I encourage the public’s patience in this regard.

“The Royal Bermuda Regiment embodiment will conclude at 6.00 p.m. today, and the EMO Command Centre will also stand down at this afternoon, so please do not call the EMO phone number [444-1447].

“Finally, I wish to thank all of our EMO partner agencies for their tireless work throughout the night and members of the public for heeding the warnings and advisories. We are truly grateful for the public’s support and cooperation during this very concerning time for our island.”
