Vision To Highlight Vision Loss Related Issues
Vision Bermuda, registered charity #90, will hold a range of events to highlight the issues facing people affected by vision loss.
A spokesperson said, “Thursday, October 13, is World Sight Day and is recognized as a day to raise public awareness about blindness and vision loss, influence governments to support blindness prevention and rehabilitation programmes and educate the general public about how to maintain healthy vision.
“It is an international day of education and awareness held each year on the second Thursday of October and is sponsored globally by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness in conjunction with the World Health Organization.”
Theresa Hall, Vision Bermuda’s Executive Director, said, “This year’s World Sight Day will focus on the #LoveYourEyes campaign. It is about creating awareness that everyone, at some stage in life, will experience an eye health issue. Sight is a gift, and we should prioritise our eye health. With 80% of blindness and vision loss avoidable or treatable if detected early enough, we are calling on everyone to show their support for World Sight Day by pledging to get their eyes tested.
The spokesperson said, “On Monday, October 10th, 2022, at 6:15pm Vision Bermuda will host ‘Vision Talk’ on Ocean 89 when Theresa McMordie, Vision Bermuda’s qualified Vision Rehabilitation Professional, will discuss common eye diseases and tips for protecting your sight. This is a part of a monthly information series which discusses topics related to vision.
“On Wednesday, October 12th, Lindo’s are supporting World Sight Day by holding a Tag Day at their Warwick store and a Round Up Day at their Devonshire store.
“As Vision Bermuda’s home, Beacon House, is currently under renovation, on Thursday, October 13th there will be an Open House held at the Digicel headquarter on the corner of Victoria Street and Cedar Avenue from 11:30am to 2:30pm. This event is sponsored by Digicel Bermuda and the public is invited to stop by for refreshments and to take the opportunity to learn about Vision Bermuda’s programmes and activities.
“Finally, at 1:15pm on the steps of City Hall on Thursday, October 13th, World Sight Day, Ed Christopher, Hamilton’s Town Crier will make an official declaration of the day with a Proclamation.”
Ms Hall explained, “Vision Bermuda delivers vision rehabilitation programmes and services. Vision rehabilitation is the process of restoring functional ability and improving quality of life and independence in an individual who has lost visual function through illness or injury. The goal is to give blind and partially sighted people the tools they need to live they life they want to lead.”
