Paralympian Jessica Lewis has unveiled her new racing chair as she begins her preparations for two busy years of competition.

Lewis decided in the summer to alter her seating position to increase her power and received her custom-made wheelchair, an R1 model designed by Chris Peterson of Custombike USA, this week.

“The seating is different, so it will take a bit of getting used to it,” Lewis told Bernews.

“My knees fit much tighter, and I feel more secure in the frame.

“I’ve only been able to use it on the roller so far, which can be a little different than the track, so I’m excited to see how it feels when I get home [to Bermuda]. It’s too cold now to go out in Canada.”

Lewis, based in Mississauga, Ontario, will compete in four championships over the next two years: the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris, and the Parapan Am Games in Santiago, Chile, both next year and the rescheduled World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan, and the Paralympics in Paris, both in 2024.

Lewis, 29, was recently appointed a director of the WindReach charity and vice-chairman of the Bermuda Olympic Athletes Commission.
