Van Putten Releases ‘African Dream Stories’

The Bermuda National Library will host the book launch of Melodye Micëre Van Putten’s 15th book, African Dream Stories. this Wednesday, December 7th from 6 to 7:30 pm on the second floor of the adult library. There will be light refreshments, a reading from the book and book signing.

African Dream Stories is Van Putten’s sixth children’s book and fourth of cultural fiction for children. Beautifully printed and illustrated by Bermudian artist and educator Angela Ming-Bean it is a story of a young girl searching for her history when her teacher told her there wasn’t any.

“Other children’s books written by the veteran educator include Ashay! Bermuda History Stories for Children and Ashay! Bermuda History for Young People. These books include the stories of Sally Bassett, Joseph Rainey and Mary Prince; it discusses the formation of the Bermuda Industrial Union, the Bermuda Workers’ Association and Dr. E.F. Gordon’s pivotal leadership role. It also includes the 1959 Theatre Boycott and National Heroes Dame Lois Browne Evans and Dr. Pauulu Kamarakefego [Roosevelt Brown]. Individual stories conclude with glossaries and study questions; the book ends with lessons for today’s young people,” a spokesperson said.

“All of Van Putten’s books will be available for purchase with a number of them being on a special discount, cash-only sale for the occasion. Her intention and purpose continues to be to provide an exciting and important opportunity for children, parents and grandparents to be able to learn the history armed with academically based and empowering information.”
