Gombeys Apologise, Pledge To Promote Unity

January 4, 2023

The Bermuda Gombey Council have issued an apology to the community for an incident on Monday night and said “all troupes have created policies to deter anti-social behavior and promote unity within the culture.”

This follows after an altercation happened, and the police have confirmed they are looking into it., saying “the Bermuda Police Service, [BPS], is aware of video clips depicting an altercation involving individuals in traditional Bermuda Gombey costume, being circulated on social media. The matter is being looked into.”

A spokesperson said, “The leaders of each Bermuda Gombey troupe met collectively as the Bermuda Gombey Council [Gombey Evolution Troupe, Gombey Warriors, HnH Gombeys, Place's New Generation Gombeys, Warwick Gombeys, and SMS Village Gombeys] on Wednesday for a discussion about the Gombey culture.

“Collectively, they wish to apologize to the community for the way that Monday night ended, particularly after such a positive day of family and community Gombey support.

“Much work has been done over the past few years to strengthen the ties between each Gombey troupe, and as role models in the community, the Bermuda Gombey leaders are committed to retaining these connections and working together to preserve the culture they all love.

“The impacted troupes have internally dealt with those that escalated tensions and all troupes have created policies to deter anti-social behavior and promote unity within the culture. They ask that their friends, followers, fans and media do not share social media content of anti-social behaviour, but instead celebrate the good parts of the holiday.

“They ask that everyone support their favorite group without negative banter against other groups. Clashes are a part of the Gombey tradition to showcase the unique artistry of each troupe and to celebrate that all of us are continuing the Bermuda Gombey culture.

“January is traditionally Gombey month, with Gombeys dancing and drumming every Saturday [weather dependent]. For each group’s schedule, please refer to the Bermuda Gombey Trackers Facebook group. Thank you to the Gombey community for your ongoing support.”

Thank you fellas, for doing the honorable thing by having dialog and proper communication in the aftermath of this holidays conflict. You all at some point came from one of the original gombey groups which decided to branch off. So you all know what’s the right thing to do…..
Always remember that you have younger boys and fans watching and emulating your behavior be it bad or good…..
Be the role models that you once admired in the older generation of gombeys….
    Blessings upon Blessings

  2. I have seen the video it was like a bunch uncivilized people, but hey that’s the way the PLP want it. No arrests nothing. They reduce gun sentences. You think there is problems now wait for independence and legal weed.

  3. Marine Life says:

More Social Media postings of people shooting video who have nothing better and more constructive to do. If you have video, go to the Police with it and quit the stupidness! Unprofessional postings like this only add to the trouble. Let the Media report issues. Not the every day Joe who posts info. And can’t get his stories straight!
Same issue with the ‘double Mask’ mandate this week about the new Covid Variants. Unfounded LIES! Thanks to Social Media CRAP!

  4. Mike Litorus says:

Well…Let us introduce Squaw Gombeys…scantily clad Brazillian women of the Amazon region .At worst they capture men and take them home for breeding purposes…they consist of fbb with stunning attributes anotomically speaking ( and looking).
They do not fuss or fight…the men kind of go somewhat willingly….it all works out nicely.

    What a travesty!

Historically the gathering of the Gombey troupes were frowned upon by the island’s ruling class. The gombeys were viewed as a disruption and threat to social order.
It appears that history is sadly repeating itself.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

I’m not sure when in history you are referring to, but I have always enjoyed Gombeys coming past the house.

Of course, I have never never been part of the “ruling class”, despite the colour of my skin.

” The gombeys were viewed as a disruption and threat to social order.”

..and, here they are, doing just that.

    • Dread says:

Bermuda is finished, you think these idiots will listen to the gombey elders…. not a chance!

  6. Observer says:

Sorry to see this, but unfortunately it seems to be a sign of the times in Bermuda. Have we gone too far with no chance of recovery, sad to say I think we have?

    • Behind the Mask says:

Agree 100%. No chance of recovery and it will get worse. I don’t think the average Bermudian has a clue of the depth of what is going on in the community. But we see it everyday; (i) on our roads; (ii) in our neighbourhoods; (iii) in the schools and (iv) in the workplace.

The level of disrespect; lack of integrity and accountability is permeating throughout our community and sadly to the point of no return.

This is a Bermuda that I have never ever seen before in my life and I have no other choice but to seek solace and peace of mind elsewhere.

It comes from the top. You get what you vote for.

        • Behind the Mask says:

You are preaching to the converted….I am apolitical, so I choose not to vote.

However, you cannot blame a government entirely for the lack of respect to one’s fellow man, as everyone knows that it starts from the home! There are so many broken men and women who have come from abusive backgrounds who in turn cannot raise children and are unwilling to ‘break the cycle.’ So the cycle continues and the laws are NOT enforced and on and on it goes!

          • Joe Bloggs says:

Enforcing the law may prevent future abuse of people, but it will not do anything to help those who are already broken. That will require empathy and respect in the community, something that is sorely lacking in Bermuda right now.

  8. Real Deal says:

    Easy fix for Bermuda.
take off your shoes and dance barefoot on your toes/forefoot with out your heels touching the ground because when you feel everystep you take the steps will mean more to you emotionally and intellectually so you end up putting for effort into creating those steps from start(thought) to finish

many do not notice that those that dance Gombeys actually gain a physically strength greater then normal humans that do not dance.
The question become what do you use that strength for Chaos or MaAT?

The thing is Gombeys was never to be dance in shoes because the strength you gain can corrupt your ego if you do not feel your steps. feeling those steps builds and strengthens your moral and conscious mind that strives to maintain MaAt

the world is waiting for us
