Erica Hawley admits she was “happy and surprised” with her best finish in a World Triathlon Cup race after finishing eleventh in Huatulco, Mexico, on Saturday [June 17].
The Bermudian finished the elite women’s sprint distance race – 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and 5km run – in 1hr 1min 52sec.
Her splits were 10:01, 32:26 and 18:06.
“Very happy and honestly surprised with yesterday,” Hawley wrote on Instagram. “Hottest race of the year for sure. After Yokohama [where Hawley finished 45th], I was struggling to believe in myself and often let the fear of failure take hold of my training and everyday life.
“This was exactly the confidence boost I needed, and I will cherish it. Top ten soon.”
Anahi Alvarez Corral, of Mexico, won the race in 1:00:31, with Gwen Jorgensen, of the United States, coming second in 1:01:04, and Mercedes Romero Orozco placing third in 1:01:11.
