Football: Bermuda Women Defeat Jersey 4-0
[Written by Stephen Wright]
The Bermuda women’s team enjoyed a convincing 4-0 win over Jersey in their opening match at the Island Games in Guernsey, the Channel Islands, today [July 9].
Bermuda made a perfect start to their group one match at The Track Cycling Ground in St Sampson when captain Eva Frazzoni scored from close range in the second minute after the Jersey defence failed to clear their lines.
They doubled their lead in the 34th when forward Jya Ratteray-Smith applied a neat finish after a mazy dribble through the Jersey backline.
After the break, Ratteray-Smith notched her second, curling in an effort from the edge of the box in the 49th before forward LeiLanni Nesbeth fired a left-footed shot beyond Jersey goalkeeper Sara Luce six minutes later.
Naquita Robinson, the Bermuda women’s coach, said she was thrilled with her side’s eye-catching and tenacious display against a much-fancied Jersey outfit.
“It was a fantastic performance,” Robinson told Bernews. “The players have put the work in, and it showed.
“We took control from the start [through Frazzoni’s goal]. We had a few nerves while it was 1-0, but the girls understood what they had to do.”
Robinson added: “We’ve been working on the physical side of our game. We’re technically and tactically not far off many teams in our region.”
Robinson’s side face Hitra, who lost 3-1 to Aland today, in their second group game tomorrow.
“We’re not underestimating anyone and will go hard against our next opponents,” she added. “We will do what we’ve come to do.
“I’m happy with the performances of all the starters and those who came on.”
Goals: Frazzoni 2, Ratteray-Smith 34, 49, Nesbeth 55.
