Fourth-place Maria Gornes Rodriguez, of Menorca, is seven points behind Stovell.

The 18-year-old, who is making her debut at the biennial event, described her fourth day of competing as a “mixed bag” and said she struggled at times with the high winds.

“I came third in the first race and did not so well in the second,” she told Bernews. “It was a tough day. I capsized once and had a spin!”

Stovell, who started sailing aged seven at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, said she is confident of securing a medal finish for Bermuda.

“I think tomorrow, with the wind a bit lighter, I can get some good scores and get into the second or third position,” she added.

Stovell’s teammate, Ahzai Smith, is in ninth position with a net total of 59 points.
