BUEI Talks To Hold ‘Island SOS’ On October 1
The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] is set to hold its 2023 ‘Island SOS’ Talks series with a panel discussion featuring past presenters from 2022 and 2023, aiming to highlight sustainable ocean development strategies from various island nations across the globe.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] is excited to announce that our 2023 series of ‘Island SOS’ Talks conclude this Sunday, October 1st at 3:00pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium [wheelchair accessible].
“Running monthly, ‘BUEI Talks: Island SOS’ aims to highlight forward-thinking ocean development strategies from islands across the globe. Typically focusing on a singular island nation and topic ranging from ideas of sustainable tourism to zero waste management, this month’s talk will consist of a Panel Discussion between past presenters from our 2022 and 2023 series.
“The discussion will be hosted by local scholar and activist William Campbell. During the Panel Discussion, presenters will also give an update on their respective Sustainable Ocean Strategies since presenting in the ISOS series.
Presenters include:
“Lanya Fanovitch of Trinidad and Tobago. Fanovitch is a Senior Ecologist of the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville [ERIC], of Tobago. ERIC is an organisation that works towards sustainability for the people and ecosystems of Northeast Tobago.
Ludovic Burnsis of Easter Island [Rapa Nui]. Burnsis the Executive Director of a community-led organisation called ‘Te Mau o te Vaikava’ which aims to prioritise the conservation of Rapa Nui’s local Marine Protected Area.
“Sue Neureuter of the Noises Islands. Neureuter is one of three custodians of The Noises Islands, a chain of islands and rock stacks located off the coast of the North Island of New Zealand, within the northeast region of Hauraki Gulf Marine Park [or Ko te Pataka kai o Tikapa Moana Te Moananui a Toi in Māori]. Composed of 130-million-year-old Jurassic greywacke rock, The Noises are home to an incredible range of sea birds, invertebrates, reptiles and indigenous vegetation.
“Dr. Paul Brickle of the Falkland Islands. Dr. Brickle is the Chief Executive Officer of the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute [SAERI]. Established in 2012, SAERI aims to be a world-class research institute that teaches students and builds capacity within and between the South Atlantic Overseas Territories as well as globally through three focal areas: Ecosystems, Earth Science, and Remote Sensing and Data.”
