Nia Christopher Becomes All Time Goal Leader
Bermuda’s Nia Christopher scored twice for her Towson University women’s soccer team, with her latest goals making her the Maryland-based university’s all-time leader in career goals with 31.
The school’s match report said, “Towson women’s soccer got a pair of goals from Nia Christopher in a 2-1 win against Campbell on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers held a halftime lead and needed a late Christopher goal to propel the Tigers to the win.
“Towson [7-1-1, 3-0-1 CAA] got a pair of goals from Christopher in the win against Campbell [2-4-3, 0-2-2 CAA]. Her goal in the first half made her the all-time leader in career goals with 31. Her four-point game now has her tied for the record in career points with 77.
“Christopher netted two goals, her fourth and fifth of the season.
“Jasmine Hamid and Phoebe Canoles also picked up a point each assisting on each Christopher goal.
“Towson applied pressure early with Nia Christopher, Jasmine Hamid and Phoebe Canoles all getting good looks within the first five minutes.
“Nia Christopher would give the Tigers the lead in the eighth minute. Jasmine Hamid would take the ball down the right side and throw a ball on net. After a deflection, Nia Christopher would clean up a rebound for the goal.
“The goal for Christopher gave her goal number 31 for her career, making her the career leader in goals.
“Alexandra Rush nearly extended the lead. Rush was able to get around and chip the goalkeeper, but a last second block kept the ball out of the net.
“Towson would have good possession in the final two minutes to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Towson once again started the second half with pressure. Nia Christopher had a shot saved and then just seconds later was in on net but was once again stopped.
“Campbell would find the equalizer in the 60th minute after a rebound in the box.
“It would not take long for the Tigers to retake the lead. Christopher would head home a cross from Phoebe Canoles in the 69th minute to give Towson a 2-1 lead.
“Campbell would push late for an equalizer, but Riley Melendez made a big save in the final minute to preserve a 2-1 win on Sunday.
“Nia Christopher became the program leader in career goals with 31. Her first half goal moved her past Emily Banes for the all-time lead.
“Christopher is now tied with Banes for the program lead in career points with 77 after her two-goal game.”
