Nancy Anne Miller Releases ‘Queen Palm’ Book
Bermudian poet Nancy Anne Miller has released Queen Palm: A Bermuda Christmas, which explores “the combination of African/English iconography as presented in Bermudian customs, the American, sometimes garish modes of celebration, Advent symbols and the poet’s process, as well as a final section of Biblically-based poems.”
A spokesperson said, “In Queen Palm: A Bermuda Christmas, Bermudian internationally published poet Nancy Anne Miller writes about the abounding iconography and many metaphors that the Christmas season presents. The four sections explore the combination of African/English iconography as presented in Bermudian customs, the American, sometimes garish modes of celebration, Advent symbols and the poet’s process, as well as a final section of Biblically based poems.
“Miller’s highly visual work is driven by use of image metaphor which informs the poems as well as any spiritual intent as she explores the possibility of language and imagery in each poem. Christmas is the invitation for both a vigorous poetic inquiry and a holy search.
“Queen Palm: A Bermuda Christmas is a collection of poems inspired by the rich cultural traditions of her island home. By referencing steel bands that chime, orange loquat jam, ‘straw hats’ that ‘sift sunlight,’ and the tide that ‘rolls and unrolls,’ Miller allows the reader to experience the culture, sights and sounds of year-round Bermuda.
“However, in Queen Palm: A Bermuda Christmas, she does focus mainly on Christmas customs unique to the island. Through her use of vibrant imagery, readers can see palm trees ‘corseted’ with colourful lights, hear the rhythms of the Gombeys, who dance in the streets on Boxing Day, or taste cassava pie, a crucial dish at the Bermuda Christmas table.”
The spokesperson said, “Queen Palm is available to order through The Poetry Book Society website, the Valley Press website, and the Waterstones website.”
