Jodie Tucker’s latest art exhibition at the Rock Island coffee shop had her admirers buzzing Thursday evening. Her new show, “Island Girl,” is a captivating departure from her well-known floral paintings, introducing a refreshing and unexpected perspective.

This collection of approximately 20 pieces, rooted in intricate collage work, reveals a multi-layered creative journey that spans three years. Tucker’s inspiration, drawn from a 19th-century sculpture print and an 18th-century pastel portrait of a Caribbean descent singer, showcases a dynamic blend of artistic elements, transcending traditional boundaries.

Tucker’s use of “prints of lithographs, of sea corals, sea plants, flying fish, seahorses, shells,” ingeniously brought life to the details, notably in the depiction of her subject’s hair. The infusion of old Bermuda maps in crafting the dress’s bodice underscores the connection between her art and the island’s history, forming a unique narrative within each piece.

The serene woman from “Portrait of a Young Woman,” an 18th-century pastel by Swiss artist Jean-Etienne Liotard, is masterfully reimagined by Tucker, exuding an unspoken elegance that feels like an emblem of Bermuda’s own rich heritage and multifaceted beauty.

Tucker’s exploration goes beyond traditional mediums, encompassing hand embroidery, hand painting, and digital effects, all contributing to the textural and visual depth of her works. The resulting vibrant giclee prints reflect an artistic style reminiscent of Andy Warhol, while interior pieces like cushions and handmade lampshades, as well as prints on cotton from her original watercolors, extend the sensory experience of “Island Girl.”

This sold-out exhibition is not only a testament to Tucker’s artistic evolution but also a compelling representation of Bermuda’s culture and history, gracefully unveiled through her imaginative lens. “Island Girl” has resonated particularly with younger generations, underscoring the timeless relevance of art in bridging the past and the present. As the exhibition unfolds, it invites viewers to explore the fusion of art and history, leaving them eager to engage in the vibrant discourse it sparks.
