CedarBridge Launch Extended Reality Program
[Written by Tajer Basden]
This year, CedarBridge Academy has been elevating its learning environment, with the launch of its Extended Reality [XR] Program. This program consists of a combination of Virtual Reality [VR] and Augmented Reality [AR] programming and technology. The launch of this program was initiated by the CedarBridge Academy School Transformation Team, with a view of developing concepts to support the Signature Learning Programs [SLPs]. CedarBridge Academy currently offers SLPs in STEM and Trades & Professions, and the implementation of the XR Program supports the new curriculum and course offerings, while also providing support for traditional disciplines.
Mrs Natasha Thomas, Co-Lead of the CedarBridge Academy School Transformation Team stated that, “We are excited about the launch of the XR Program, as we continue the wider implementation of our Signature Learning Programs and concepts, at CedarBridge Academy. Research has shown that Extended Reality [XR] programs enhance student learning by offering immersive simulations and interactive experiences, promoting deeper understanding, engagement, and critical thinking skills across various educational disciplines.”
“Last year, the School Transformation Team was engaged in a wealth of research and prototyping experiences, to ensure that there was student and staff support for the implementation of the XR Program. Ms Kimberley Tucker, STEM Teacher and Head of the XR Program, has been instrumental in the research, design, development and implementation of the program at CedarBridge Academy. It has been exciting to hear the feedback from Ms Tucker, students and staff, and we look forward to continuing to support the wider implementation of the XR Program.”
The XR program aims to help students better understand lessons taught in class, by providing access to real-world scenarios, while in the classroom. The program currently uses equipment including Meta Quest 2 headsets, and 360 degree cameras. Though the program is still in the early stages, the launch has already been a success, with several students and teachers expressing their hope and keen interest in using XR technologies in their classrooms. CedarBridge students have already begun such lessons, and they have seen great success with the Functional Academic students. They have used VR to play games to enhance their memory, and work on their fitness levels. Students have also used this equipment in Biology, Comparative Anatomy and other science courses, to examine and compare the anatomical structures of various animals, and balance equations, just to name a few. The creation of original works by students is also taking place in Photography, Animation Production, and Digital Media Product.
Head of the XR Program, Ms Kimberley D. Tucker, exclaims that with the program, “Students can tour the world, conduct lab experiments, skydive over the Korfu pyramids, and create a unique architecture”. Further to that, the CedarBridge Academy XR Program is using the VR Application, BodySwaps. Bodyswaps is a software program with modules designed to improve: communication skills and public speaking, increase emotional intelligence, along with developing employability, job interview, management and leadership skills. When students use the application, they have the opportunity to navigate microaggressions, build skills to understand conflict, engage in impactful communication, and ultimately, present their best self. Additionally, she notes that in schools, “Studies show that these immersive experiences increase knowledge retention and boost test scores”. She and many other educators are optimistic about the success of the XR program.
CedarBridge Academy plans to feature the work of students and teachers in the future, as well incorporating Bermudian talent in the program. Ms Tucker mentions that, “The creation of new, Bermuda-themed VR content is also being planned. Students will be recording with the 360 degree cameras around the island in 2024, so be on the lookout for them!”
