Bermuda Smash Invitational To Be Held In May
The Bermuda Smash Invitational will be held in May 2024, with the organisers saying that “there will be 4 teams, with 4 days of T20 cricket, and live entertainment throughout.”
A spokesperson said, “Bermudians love their cricket. The vibrant crowds made that crystal clear at last year’s Bermuda Premier League, as well as at the ICC Americas Men’s Final.
“From 1884 when the first recorded cricket match occurred on the island to today, 140 years later, you say cricket and Bermudians will say “Game on!”.
“With this cricketing heritage in mind, it is a true pleasure to announce that May 2024 will be another landmark cricketing moment for this idyllic island. During Heritage Month 2024, with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport and the Bermuda Cricket Board, Bermuda’s first ever International T20 Tournament will be held.
“The aptly named Bermuda Smash Invitational will take place on May 11th and then from May 15th to the 19th. That first night, on the 11th, will feature a live draft of 4 teams, in an electrifying atmosphere designed to get everyone in the mood to compete. May 15th to the 19th is when the action really gets going, and our patrons will be treated to the most popular form of cricket alongside non-stop revelry.
“There will be 4 teams, with 4 days of T20 cricket, and live entertainment throughout, which will all come together to create an unforgettable world class weekend. This tournament promises boundary-smashing action, fierce rivalries, and cricketing excellence.”
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Owen Darrell has enthusiastically lent his support to this event. He emphasizes, “Bermuda is the ultimate sport tourism destination. This will combine everything special about Bermuda into one unbeatable package. Hosting it during Heritage Month and including live, local entertainment while welcoming international cricket players and lovers of cricket to our shores makes for a perfect new event for our calendar.”
The spokesperson said, “Assuredly, the Bermuda Smash Invitational T20 tournament will reinforce Bermuda’s exceptional ability to host international sporting events. Additionally, it will provide a financial boost to the island’s economy via the tiered involvement of many local businesses.
“Although, by any account, these are satisfactory goals for any Bermudian to attain, the BSI team is focusing on doing even more. Over many discussions in the latter half of 2023 with all stakeholders, alongside their pledged support, all at the table agreed on maximizing the benefits for local cricket and its players.
“BSI T20 presents an exclusive opportunity for local players. They can sign up, both experienced and unseasoned, to play alongside and against world class professionals, who will readily demonstrate the demands associated with performing at the highest level of this beloved game.”
Jeff Richardson, Somerset’s most successful Cup Match coach, is already on board to coach one of the teams. “This is exactly what our local players need; the opportunity to play with and compete against international players. They will witness first hand their approach to the game and it will be a memorable experience.”
The spokesperson said, “The BSI team is encouraging cricket players, cricket lovers, and even those who are new to cricket to come out and enjoy this elite cricket action up close and personal.”
Stephen Outerbridge, co-founder of BSI, also states that “though this tournament is the first of its kind for Bermuda, the dedication and commitment shown by the stakeholders at the ongoing meetings, ensures it will be an unmitigated success.”
He goes on to say, “Bermuda is inviting the world to the most picturesque weekend of cricket and live entertainment they can imagine.”
