Met Opera: Live In HD & Encore Series Showing
The Bermuda Opera team is presenting the Met: Live in HD [2022-23] & Encore series in Bermuda on film on Sundays at BUEI at 5.00pm, with the next installment to take place on February 4.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Opera team is thrilled to show the next opera during Black History Month, composed by Grammy award winning jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard as part of the Met: Live in HD [2022-23] & Encore series in Bermuda [on film]. Don’t miss your chance to see these world-class productions on the big screen in high definition quality.
“All operas on Sundays at 5.00pm at BUEI, unless otherwise advised. All have English subtitles and are approximately 3-4 hours long, including a 30 minute interval.
“The next opera is Champion [Terence Blanchard] – Met Premiere – on Sunday 4 February 2024 at 5pm, at BUEI.
“Six-time Grammy award–winning composer Terence Blanchard brings his first opera to the Met after his Fire Shut Up in My Bones made history in the 2021–22 season. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green is young boxer Emile Griffith, who rises from obscurity to become a world champion, and bass-baritone Eric Owens portrays Griffith’s older self, haunted by ghosts of his past.
“Soprano Latonia Moore is Emelda Griffith, the boxer’s estranged mother, and mezzo- soprano Stephanie Blythe is bar owner Kathy Hagan. Yannick Nézet-Séguin returns to the podium to, and Director James Robinson, whose productions of Fire Shut Up in My Bones and Porgy and Bess brought down the house, oversees the staging. Camille A. Brown, whose choreography electrified audiences in Fire and Porgy, also returns. In English with subtitles; approximately 3.25hrs, including a 30 minute interval.
