Photos: Berkeley Holds Foreign Language Week
The Berkeley Institute recently celebrated cultures and languages through its annual Foreign Language Week, where a different culture and language represented in the school and wider community was highlighted.
A spokesperson said, “The week commenced with a vibrant cultural exchange where students from various corners of the globe shared insights about their countries. From Bermuda to Guyana, the Philippines to Jamaica, Palestine to the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador to Brazil, it was truly an enriching experience. During the Advisory period, students engaged in a trivia session, testing their knowledge of languages and cultures to vie for top prizes.
“On Tuesday, S3 students NiZeko OuterBridge, Camia Matthew, Quaelhun Cameron, and Solana Smith opened the day with the Lord’s Prayer in French. At lunch, the Language Olympics brought forth a lively atmosphere with games including dominoes, hula hoop, musical chairs, and jump rope, fostering camaraderie and friendly competition among both staff and students.
“Wednesday commenced with a Portuguese prayer led by S2 Student, Jessica Pacheco, followed by an International Food Tasting Fair during lunch that delighted taste buds with a diverse array of cuisines. From savory to sweet, spicy to tangy, staff and students sampled dishes from various cultures, stepping out of their culinary comfort zones to embrace new flavors. Special thanks are extended to Fish & Tings, House of India, Taste the Rainbow, The Front Yard, Teaffany’s, as well as to Mr. Sabian Hayward, Mr. Isaac Holmes, Ms. Kerry Ann Wynter, and Mrs. Lisa Hyacinth-Logie for their contributions.
“Thursday offered a feast for the senses, beginning with an engaging kite-making presentation by community member Mr. Gary Cann and Geography teacher, Mr. Oladapo Frederick. The presentation showcased different types of kites and materials used for each. The afternoon featured a vibrant cultural fashion show, where students showcased traditional attire from various countries, alongside stirring performances of cultural songs and dances, including Flamenco, Salsa, Bachata, and Axe. Additionally, a special rendition of “Proud to be Bermudian” by our own Music Teacher, Mr. John Woolridge, captivated the audience. It was a day filled with pride and celebration of the school’s diverse student population and cultural heritages.
“The Berkeley Institute extends its heartfelt gratitude to the dedication and hard work of Instructional Team Leader for Foreign Language, Mrs. Glemonique Grant-Edwards, and the rest of the Foreign Language team, comprising Mrs. Leslie Carrion, Dr. Neekaie Beckles-Clarke, Mrs. Karen Holmes, and Mrs. Nicola Christie-Veitch. The week was nothing short of amazing, showcasing a variety of activities that celebrated cultural exchange and appreciation.”
