Dale Eve, the Bermuda goalkeeper, believes the future is bright for the senior national team after being impressed by the new influx of young players at the recent Fifa Series in Saudi Arabia.
Michael Findlay, the Bermuda head coach, named several under-20 players in his 23-man squad for the trip to Jeddah, including Sachiel Ming, Daion Swan-DeSilva, Harry Twite, Riley Robinson and Aunde Todd.
And Eve, who aged 29 was among the elder statesmen in the group, said he was encouraged by how the youngsters acquitted themselves in the two matches – a 2-0 win over Brunei Darussalam and a 5-1 defeat to Guinea.
“It was good to see some young faces coming into the senior team,” Eve told Bernews.
“It was the first time I’d seen many of them train and play. They surprised me. They had positive attitudes and are ready to go. The guys who played did well. Credit to them.”
Eve said the series – a pilot project launched to provide international friendly matches between nations who do not usually get opportunities to play each other – served as perfect preparation for the start of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in June.
Bermuda have been pitted against Honduras, Antigua and Barbuda, Cuba and the Cayman Islands in group A.
“The trip was a chance for us to get the ball rolling for June,” Eve said. “We’re looking forward to the games against Antigua and Honduras.
“It was probably the best camp we’ve had in terms of having everything we needed.
“The pitches and facilities were unbelievable in Saudi – they’re building their football world.”
Eve signed for Walsall Wood in the Pitching In Premier League Division One Midlands in November last year, where he has impressed between the sticks, returning from international duty for their 3-0 defeat away to Sporting Khalsa on Monday.
“I’ve been here getting games and I’ve enjoyed it,” said Eve, who recently joined AceBoy Sports Group, a sports management company run by Bermudian football agent Jason Gonsalves.
“We were doing well, but things have been a bit up and down since promotion was off the table. I came here because I knew the manager [Ian Long] from my time at Alvechurch.”
Although Eve is open to remaining at the West Midlands outfit beyond this season, he admits he has ambitions of playing overseas.
“I’ll see what the manager does next season; I’m sure he would like to keep me around [at Walsall Wood],” he added. “I’m open to all aspects. I’m looking for a move overseas. I wouldn’t mind going back to Saudi Arabia.
“I’ve been knocking on a few doors to see what I can make happen. A lot of clubs [in England and overseas] will be looking for new players in the summer and hopefully, we can get lucky.”
