The Bermuda High School [BHS] held a five-year anniversary celebration for its Innovation Centre on Thursday evening [April 16].
A spokesperson said, “BHS is thrilled to celebrate the 5-year anniversary of its Innovation Centre. Opened during the 2020-2021 academic school year, the Innovation Centre, Joy Bluck Arts Wing and Alvin Ferreira Family Theatre brought state-of-the-art facilities to the BHS campus and schools across the island.
“In the five years since, BHS has raised the standard of innovation across the school, from the Primary department through Secondary and the Senior Years Programme. Students have flourished academically with the improved facilities available to them, including the Renaissance Re Creation and Innovation Space, the AXA XL Computer Science and Robotics Lab, the Gladys Misick Morrell and Doris Trott Butterfield Leadership Centre, the Smith Savoie Multimedia Studio, the Buchanan Commons, the Sarah & Stephen Young Visual Arts Studio, The Halcyon Studio, The Kast Family Collaboration Space, the Maude & Thomas Lines Science Lab, and the Katherine Johnson Mathematics Classroom. The building was also the driving force behind the introduction of the STEAM curriculum, which is celebrated annually through STEAM Week. On Thursday, April 17th, 2026, BHS celebrated the donors who made the construction of these facilities possible.”
Head of School, Carol A. Swainson, said, “We are delighted to celebrate the 5-year anniversary of this collective accomplishment. Innovation for girls and Bermuda in general is essential in the 21st century. We have proudly shared these beautiful resources with the broader community in addition to the girls at BHS”.
Head student Lily Butler was in Year 8 when the Innovation Centre first opened. “I think the Innovation Centre has given me a refreshing environment to learn in and the facilities for use, especially in the arts department, are amazing and have really benefitted my learning throughout GCSEs and A-Levels, providing all the resources I could need to be successful in my studies.”
Primary teaching assistant, Cassie Furtado, broke ground on the project as one of the Head Students of the Class of 2019. “Returning now as a staff member, it is truly remarkable to see how the facility has evolved from what was once only a sketch. As a former student, I find it especially meaningful to witness this transformation firsthand. It has been a full-circle moment for me, transitioning from being a student in this community to now teaching young learners within these same walls. Having the opportunity to guide Primary students as they explore and innovate in the new creative spaces brings a deep sense of purpose and pride. The completed facility not only reflects a significant investment in the school’s future, but has also created enhanced opportunities for both students and teachers, supporting richer learning experiences and a more dynamic educational environment.”
Outside of academics, these spaces have also been utilised by the community for programmes including She Leads, the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition, various summer camps, conferences, and more.
Board Chair Lesley Cox added, “From the beginning, our vision was to share this space with young people across Bermuda, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see the community embrace it through our programmes and partnerships over the past five years.”
“The school has continued to build on their legacy of innovation, introducing the Rajeev Kapur Centre for AI Leadership in November, 2025.”
