Ministry Meets With Cayman Islands Officials
Senior policy officials from the Cayman Islands Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport & Development [PAHITD] recently met with members of the Ministry of Transport in Bermuda.
Minister of Transport Wayne Furbert; the Department of Public Transport Acting Director, Jonelle Christopher; Director of Marine and Ports Services, Rudy Cann; Director of Transport Control Department, Terry Spencer; and Permanent Secretary Shivon Washington and Senior Policy Officials, Alicia de Vries and Andrew Ashton.
A spokesperson said, “Alicia de Vries and Andrew Ashton, currently serving with the Cayman Islands Government on secondment from the UK Department for Transport, represented the Cayman Islands Government. The Cayman Islands Government arranged the meetings to gain insights into Bermuda’s transportation operations that could potentially inform enhancements to the Cayman Islands’ transportation system.
“The meetings focused on Bermuda’s public transportation infrastructure, including buses, ferries, and public service vehicles, and the regulatory frameworks supporting each component of our complex, multifaceted system.
“The discussions were comprehensive, covering policy frameworks, operational intricacies, and financial aspects, all of which are crucial to the effective functioning of the transportation ecosystem.”
Minister of Transport, Wayne Furbert, underscored the significance of the meeting, stating, “The Ministry team were pleased to host the meeting. The visit strengthened bilateral relations and set the stage for continued cooperation and promising opportunities for future collaboration. We are preparing for a forthcoming visit by the Hon. Minister, Johany “Jay” Ebanks, Minister of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport & Development for the Cayman Islands, in the coming months.”
Not sure what positives they will learn. Electric buses charged by electricity generated using heavy oil does not reduce emissions. On line bus schedule for the benefit of passengers? An up to date bus schedule readily available?
This should be a wake up call to Bermuda. Quote” We are preparing for a forthcoming visit by the Hon. Minister, Johany “Jay” Ebanks, Minister of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport & Development for the Cayman Islands”. One minister whereas Bermuda has 4.
Can Bermuda send the Minister of Finance to Cayman to learn how they run a larger Island but with only $400million or so Government debt? That would be money well spent rather than trips to Dubai.
“The Cayman Islands Government arranged the meetings to gain insights into Bermuda’s transportation operations that could potentially inform enhancements to the Cayman Islands’ transportation system.”
The Cayman Islands’ government wants to learn what not to do.
