Khano Smith’s Rhode Island Held To Draw

Khano Smith’s Rhode Island were denied their second league win of the season after conceding two late goals in a 2-2 draw away to Memphis 901 in the USL Championship yesterday [June 12].

The visiting side led 2-0 thanks to goals from Conor McGlynn in the seventeenth minute and Joe Brito in the 66th minute before Rhode Island goalkeeper Koke Vegas was dismissed for a foul outside the box in the 90th minute.

Memphis pulled a goal back from the ensuing free kick, which Samuel Careaga curled beyond substitute goalkeeper Jackson Lee.

In the eleventh minute of stoppage time, Rhode Island conceded a penalty after a foul from Karifa Yao, with Marlon Santos stepping up to equalise for Memphis 901.

Smith, a former Bermuda and New England Revolution winger, was appointed as head coach and general manager of Rhode Island in March last year.

His side, who are eleventh in the Eastern Conference with 12 points, are away to Louisville City FC on Saturday [June 22].
