Bermuda sailor Adriana Penruddocke said she is raring to go after spending the past few days “staying sharp” before her Olympic Games campaign starts tomorrow [August 1].

Penruddocke returned to the sailing venue in Marseille, a port city in the south of France, on Saturday, having travelled to Paris for the opening ceremony, where she was one of two flag bearers for Bermuda.

The 24-year-old, who competes in the women’s dinghy ILCA 6 fleet, said sailing in a barge down the River Seine past some of the most famous landmarks in the French capital was an unforgettable experience.

“It was such an honour to be a flag bearer for my country,” Penruddocke told Bernews. I’m so lucky and grateful to have had that opportunity. My parents and brother came to support me, which made it extra special.”

She added: “Having a few days at the Olympic Village was cool too.

“I’m used to competing at smaller events, with a lot fewer people, so being at the Village with the Bermuda team something different.”

Penruddocke admits there will be a few nerves jangling when she takes to the water in the Marseille Marina, but said she is excited to test herself against the top dinghy sailors in the world.

“I’m looking forward to putting my best foot forward,” she said. “Whatever else happens, happens. I’m hoping to learn a lot.

“I’ve been on the water, staying sharp and ready to race.”
