Ministry Honours 2024 Scholarship Recipients
The Ministry of Education hosted the 2024 Scholarships and Awards Reception, recognising an “outstanding group of 67 Bermudian students from diverse ages, backgrounds, and disciplines committed to furthering their education.”
A Government spokesperson said, “In his remarks, the Minister of Education, the Hon. Diallo Rabain, JP, MP, congratulated the 2024 scholarship recipients and reaffirmed the Government’s pledge to invest in Bermuda’s future.”
Minister Rabain stated, “Since 2017, the Government has doubled its scholarship funding to over $2 million, significantly increasing opportunities for higher education and enhancing accessibility to Bermuda College. The expanded funding has enabled more students to receive financial support. ”
The Government spokesperson said, “Minister Rabain also highlighted the College Promise program’s ongoing success, which allows CedarBridge and the Berkeley Institute graduates to attend Bermuda College tuition-free. In addition, for the last seven years, Bermuda College has benefited from a $300,000 annual grant specifically for financial aid to assist any student attending Bermuda College.
“The event acknowledged the dedication of the Scholarship Committees and Ms. Shanaye Smith, the Scholarship & Awards Programme Manager, for their tireless efforts in supporting Bermuda’s students.
“Key highlights from this year’s awards include:
- The introduction of a new award to encourage males to enter education.
- Three further education awards for reserved specifically for Art students.
- Expansion of the University of the West Indies Scholarship to include students studying at schools in the Caribbean.
- The first official reservation of 10 Further Education Awards for post-graduate students.
- An additional five awards were funded beyond the original budget to meet high demand.
“The following are the recipients:
Bermuda Government Scholarship [$35,000 for up to 4 years]
- Matthew Moreno is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts.
- Chiaje Rudo is pursuing a Bachelor Degree with a double major in Psychology and Mathematics at the University of Western Ontario in Canada.
Minister’s Achievement Scholarship [$25,000 for up to 4 years]
- Kenya Smith-Woodley is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Animation at Nottingham Trent University in Nottingham, England.
- Tajer Basden is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Sociology at the Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Minister’s Exceptional Student Award [$25,000 for up to 4 years overseas and $5,000 for 2 years at Bda College]
- Shea-Lah Thomas is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Science from Lynn University in Florida.
- Adonte Martin is pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Science at Bermuda College.
- Enrique Minks is pursuing a Marine Technician Specialist Diploma at the Universal Technical Institute in New Jersey.
Minister’s Technical and Vocational Award [$25,000 for up to 4 years overseas and $5,000 for 2 years at Bda College]
- Jahstice Smith is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Health at the University of the West of England, Bristol, England.
- Jazarah Codrington-Edmead is pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Arts at Bermuda College this fall.
- Dayla Richards is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
Non-Traditional Student Award [$25,000 for up to 4 years overseas]
- Aisha Hendrickson is pursuing a Bachelor in Occupational Therapy at the University of Wolverhampton in England.
- Imani Bean is pursuing a Bachelor’s in Accounting and Finance from Birmingham City University in Birmingham, England.
Teacher Education Scholarship [$20,000 for up to 3 years overseas]
- Jesaiah Talbot is pursuing a post-graduate certificate in secondary music at Manchester Metropolitan University in Manchester, England.
- Serena Simmons is pursuing a Bachelor of Education from St. Thomas University in Canada.
University of West Indies Scholarship [$7,500 for up to 3 years]
- Daisia Jones is pursuing a medical degree at St. George University in Grenada.
The Further Education Award
“Funding for college and university students who demonstrate financial need. This award is valued at $10,000; it is a one-time award that is tenable for one year. This year, 41 undergraduate students and 11 post-graduate students received this award.”
