BAA Update On Weather Radar Outage

October 22, 2024 | 6 Comments

The Bermuda Weather Service radar remains offline due to a “technical fault” with the Bermuda Airport Authority’s technicians working closely with manufacturer Leonardo Germany GmbH to resolve the issue.

A Bermuda Airport Authority [BAA] spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Weather Service [www.weather.bm] weather radar remains unavailable due to a technical fault.

“The weather radar went offline on Sunday 6 October 2024. Bermuda Airport Authority’s engineering technicians continue to work closely with the manufacturer, Leonardo Germany GmbH, to rectify the issue. The Authority’s local technicians have so far identified and replaced two faulty parts, solving part of the problem. However, ongoing troubleshooting continues in an effort to completely resolve the technical issues and to bring the weather radar back online. Leonardo is a leading manufacturer of weather radar systems and Bermuda’s weather radar is maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and with their support, including on-site support when required.

“The Authority has prioritized and escalated its resources by arranging for Leornardo engineers to travel to Bermuda to conduct a full assessment and to aid in the repair of the weather radar system. This process could take several weeks resulting in the weather radar system being offline until mid-November 2024.

“The weather radar system was commissioned in October 2019, and it is about a third of the way through its 15-year lifecycle. Excluding planned, preventative maintenance, the weather radar system’s availability has been 96.7% since commissioning.

“While it is not ideal for the weather radar to be off-line, the radar is only one part of a suite of tools used by the Bermuda Weather Service, who will continue to provide alternative graphics including satellite visuals, and a full range of weather products and services, including aviation, public weather and associated watches, warnings and advisories. It is important to note that this outage will not impact aviation safety.

“The Airport Authority would like to thank the public for their patience as our engineering technicians and the manufacturer work toward a solution. Please direct any inquiries regarding the weather radar to info@airportauthority.bm.”

We use the “com” word? Cool. Check out the Triangle Hurricane page on TheBermudaTriangle.com for the latest weather information from multiple reliable sources — government and private, including Windy. Also, real-time airplane and ship information. There are a mind-boggling number of planes and ships traveling in the area. The Triangle Cams webpage has live cams for Bermuda and other locations. The website is absolutely in my browser’s Bookmarks.

It looks like the Mean Time Between Failure for several parts came early. Is there any chance hackers got into the system and played around?

  3. Marine Life says:

People who work outside on land and in the water depend on the weather Radar to know what they can and cannot do according to the real-time rain in the area. This costs time and money to many people. This needs to be fixed soon. Another Government debacle. Ministry of Transport! Quango: Airport Authority. This is the Guilty Party this time. If it is supposed to last 15 years, is this covered under Warranty ?
You must cut the Lifespan of things in Bermuda by at least half. (Salt / Humidity ) Time on this Radar will be up soon. Maybe already!

    • Hilarious says:

Wait. To save the planet, the government must invest in an electric battery-powered weather radar system recharged by solar panels and wind turbines. That would give Bermuda bragging rights.

I completely agree with Marine Life. This situation is a disgrace and there should be serious penalties given to the people and entities responsible. Who ever is responsible for this debacle should be fined for every day the radar is not working. Utter incompetence !! Neil
PS The same applies to the ridiculous MAIL situation!
