The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport announced that the nomination period is now open for the public to select Bermuda’s next National Hero.

A Government spokesperson said, “The community will be aware that National Heroes Day, observed annually on the third Monday in June, is a public holiday dedicated to honouring those individuals who have made lasting contributions to the island’s history and heritage. This honour represents Bermuda’s highest recognition for exceptional and enduring service to the community.

“In keeping with the recently passed National Heroes Act 2024, the public nomination process takes place once every ten years. The window for submissions is now open and will close on November 12, 2024.

“Nominations for a new National Hero can be made by visiting here.”

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Senator Owen Darrell said, “Being named a National Hero is a rare honour that reflects the exceptional nature of the individuals recognized. The new legislation formalises the process to ensure the selection of National Heroes is based on established standards of service and character, free from political or temporary influences. Nominees should embody qualities such as dedication, ethical leadership, and a lasting positive impact on Bermuda. Their contributions should stand the test of time, demonstrating relevance to both past and future generations.”

The spokesperson said, “The Minister noted that a Naming and Recognition Committee will be established, composed of seven [7] appointed members, who will evaluate public nominations. This committee will not only review nominations for National Heroes but will also consider recommendations for renaming public sites and creating monuments in their honour.

“Since the induction of Bermuda’s first National Hero, Dame Lois Browne-Evans, in 2009, Bermuda has recognised eight [8] National Heroes. The most recent addition was Sir John Swan in 2016. These distinguished Bermudians serve as enduring symbols of excellence, pride, and leadership.
