Rylan DeSilva described representing the Bermuda Under-14 side at the recent Caribbean Football Union [CFU] Challenge Series in Trinidad and Tobago as a “dream come true.”
The 14-year-old helped Bermuda reach the final of the regional tournament, where they narrowly lost to Barbados in a penalty shootout.
Reflecting on the experience, DeSilva praised the unity and determination of his team-mates and the unwavering support from the coaching staff.
“It’s always been my dream to play for Bermuda,” DeSilva told Bernews. “It was an experience I’ll never forget.”
A Dandy Town youth team player, DeSilva attributed much of his success to the Bermuda Under-14 coaches, including head coach Vashun Blanchette, whose guidance he credited for his strong performances.
He also expressed gratitude to former professional player Danté Leverock, a Bermuda senior national team defender, who worked with him intensively before the tournament.
“I’d like to thank Danté Leverock for pushing me to become the player I am today, waking me up at 5.45am for training six days a week before school,” DeSilva said. “My coaches showed me you only get out what you put in.”
DeSilva was primarily used as a central attacking midfielder, although his coaches often deployed him on the wing.
“My speciality is free kicks or corners, putting the ball on target from 20 to 30 yards,” he said. “It’s not easy, but I step up to the challenge.”
DeSilva recalled a frustrating moment from the 6-0 win over Anguilla in the semi-final, hitting the woodwork from a free kick with his final touch.
“We were winning 6-0, but I wanted to score a goal,” said the Berkeley Institute student.
“Unfortunately, I was unlucky and hit the crossbar. I felt defeated when the final whistle blew, but my team-mates came to me and celebrated on making it to the finals.”
DeSilva expressed excitement about continuing to represent his country at future tournaments.
“I look forward to training with the national team to prepare for our next international tournament,” he said.
He also took a moment to acknowledge his family, expressing gratitude for their support during the tournament.
“I’d like to thank my dad and papa for travelling to Trinidad to support me and the team,” he added.
Well done son! We are beyond proud of you!!!
