Minister Urges Support For ’16 Days Of Activism’
The Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors Tinee Furbert is urging residents to join the Government and local charitable organisations in supporting the United Nation’s campaign aimed at ending gender-based violence.
A Government spokesperson said, “The United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is observed each year on November 25, marking the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which runs until December 10, Human Rights Day. The global campaign seeks to raise awareness of the devastating impact of violence against women and girls and to call for action to end this widespread human rights violation.”
Minister Furbert said, “Under this year’s campaign theme, #NoExcuse, an emphasis is placed on the importance of collective investment and continued action. The theme urges individuals, communities, and governments to unite in the fight against violence and to invest in long-term solutions.
“The Government of Bermuda, alongside local organisations, continues to take significant steps to address gender-based violence. We are most proud of the introduction of the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference [MARAC] in 2023, which represents a groundbreaking initiative. Bermuda is the first country outside of the UK to implement this model, aimed at improving responses to domestic abuse. The MARAC brings together various agencies, including the Bermuda Police Service and the Centre Against Abuse, to discuss and address the needs of victims at high risk of harm.”
Minister Furbert concluded, “We want people to get involved. Individuals and organisations are encouraged to wear orange tomorrow to raise awareness and show unity. The 16 Days of Activism serves as a necessary reminder that the fight against gender-based violence requires a community effort.”
The Government spokesperson said, “As an added note, as part of the Government’s 2024/25 Budget the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors will continue to push forward to end violence by supporting the Center Against Abuse with a $150,000 grant and will soon be introducing a perpetrator treatment programme and domestic violence social worker.
The Minister also notes that she will be convening a meeting today [Nov. 25] at the Ministry Headquarters to “discuss the Government’s commitment to address the issue of gender-based violence. She has assembled members of the Senate, public service and community organisations to discuss ways forward to tackle the challenge.
