Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda [CURB] will host the 2024 Student Leadership Conference, “Cultural Currents: Navigating Identity in Leadership,” on November 8-9.

A spokesperson said, “Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda [CURB] is thrilled to announce the 2024 Student Leadership Conference, set to take place on November 8th and 9th. This two-day conference, themed “Cultural Currents: Navigating Identity in Leadership,” will bring together senior school students from Bermuda’s public and private schools for an immersive experience in leadership, self-discovery, and cultural identity.

“The theme for this year, “Cultural Currents: Navigating Identity in Leadership,” centers on exploring and honoring Bermuda’s unique cultural identifiers. The conference will create a vibrant space where young leaders can delve into meaningful conversations around identity, guided by presentations from respected local organizations. These presentations will spotlight the unique cultural identifiers represented by each organization, from gender and race to socio economic status, age and family structure.

“Confirmed Participating Organizations: Each of these key organizations will deliver a brief presentation exploring “Identity in Leadership” from their perspective. The line-up includes:

  • Women’s Resource Centre
  • Age Concern Bermuda
  • Human Rights Commission
  • Family Centre
  • Bermuda Is Love
  • The Gina Spence Program
  • Key Note – Sion Symonds – Creator, Poet, Youth Activist

“Following each presentation, students will engage in interactive sessions designed to deepen their understanding and sensitivity to Bermuda’s diverse cultural landscape.

“The event is co-organized by Stacey-Lee Williams, Executive Director of CURB, and Carol Swainson, Principal of BHS. Together, they bring years of expertise in fostering youth empowerment and DEIB [Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging] initiatives. With ties to the National Association of Independent Schools [NAIS], Williams and Swainson are dedicated to creating an impactful experience for Bermuda’s next generation of leaders.

“This gathering aims to help students examine their own identities, enhance their leadership abilities, and cultivate a strong sense of community. The “Cultural Currents” theme underlines the importance of young people understanding the cultural dynamics that influence their lives and leadership potential, equipping them with tools to enact positive change.

Key Learning Outcomes

Participants will gain:

  • “Empowerment for the Greater Good: Insights into supporting diversity and inclusion for impactful change.
