PLP’s Jache Adams On ‘NewBP’ Movement

The “announcement of Sir John Swan’s support for ‘independent’ candidate, Suzie Arruda, is a revealing development” and “this move appears to be less about offering genuine independence and more about reviving a tired political playbook,” Jache Adams said, with the PLP MP calling it a ‘NewBP’ movement.

Mr Adams said that the “announcement of Sir John Swan’s support for ‘independent’ candidate, Suzie Arruda, is a revealing development in this election. While framed as an independent voice, Ms. Arruda’s allegiance with Sir John—a former UBP Leader and longstanding champion for its rebranded successor the OBA raises important questions.

“This move appears to be less about offering genuine independence and more about reviving a tired political playbook: divide the electorate, confuse the issues, and ultimately align with the OBA to block progress towards a fairer Bermuda for all Bermudians. This ‘NewBP’ movement is clearly positioning itself to partner with the OBA, to protect the interests of the privileged and not deliver fresh ideas for Bermuda.

“Simply put, Sir John Swan’s ‘independent’ movement is not a new voice for progress but rather an effort to prop up the same old policies that prioritize the wealthy, privileged few over the rest of us.

“In Pembroke West, my focus remains on delivering real solutions: affordable housing, expanded healthcare access, and opportunities for young Bermudians to thrive. The PLP’s record is one of commitment to building a fairer Bermuda for everyone—not just for those at the top.

“This election is a clear choice. The PLP has a proven track record of fighting for Bermudians, and making steady progress to a fairer Bermuda for all of us. While this so-called “independent” movement will only push us backwards to an OBA with no clue how to address the cost of living and an agenda of opening the immigration floodgates, slashing a woman’s access to mammograms and gutting social programmes.

“I urge Bermudians in Constituency 19 to stay focused on the issues that matter most and reject attempts to undermine the progress we have made together towards a fairer Bermuda for all of us.”

Constituency #19 Pembroke West is currently held by Mr Adams. Since the one seat system started in 2003, the OBA or UBP won the Pembroke West seat in all 4 General Elections, however that changed in 2020, when the PLP’s Jache Adams won this seat with 51.54% of the vote.

Ms Arruda announced earlier this week that she will be running in the C19 constituency, and the candidate currently listed on the OBA website for the constituency is Marcus Jones.
