[Updated] A Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] meeting tomorrow morning [Feb 14] will result in a temporary interruption in public services.

A Government spokesperson said, “The public is advised that due to a Bermuda Industrial Union full membership meeting taking place tomorrow, Friday February 14, from 10.00am to 11.30am, there will be an interruption in public services.

“Specifically, there will be no bus or ferry services during this period. Members of the public are encouraged to seek alternative transportation arrangements during this time to avoid delays.

“Other delayed services include trash collection, parks, postal delivery, and other services.

“All disrupted services will resume following the conclusion of the BIU meeting.”

Update: A Government spokesperson said, “As a follow up from today’s Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] general meeting notification, the public is advised that tomorrow, February 14, the Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU] will also hold a general membership meeting.

“The BPSU meeting will take place from 12.30 p.m. – 2.00 p.m.

“The timing of the BPSU meeting will likely result in delays or disruption to some of Government’s front facing public services.”

The Head of the Public Service, Cherie Whitter said today, “We understand the inconvenience this may cause to the community. However, we wish to assure the public that the decision to hold these two critical union membership meetings was not made lightly. It should be stressed that these membership meetings are the culmination of months of joint interest-based bargaining negotiations between the unions and the Public Service Negotiations Team, led by private sector co-chairs.

“Heads of Departments and the unions are singularly focused on minimising the impact on public services and will ensure a swift return to normal operations. With the exception of public transportation, most front facing services will remain operational.”

A Government spokesperson added, “As a reminder, tomorrow’s BIU membership meeting takes place from 10.00 a.m. – 11.30 a.m., and bus and ferry service will be affected during this time. Members of the public are encouraged to seek alternative transportation arrangements during this time to avoid delays.”

Ms. Whitter concluded, “We thank the public for their patience and understanding. The dedication and commitment of our public service employees are invaluable, and their voices are essential as we work collectively to enhance the lives of the people of Bermuda.”

This will be nothing more than a pre election whip up the base political rally at the expense of public services.

The BIU and the PLP, parts of the same animal. Who do the BIU think that they are fooling? The BIU and he PLP have no shame.

I’m sure the passengers off the cruise ship in Dockyard will fully understand and accept why they can’t get around Bermuda today. Nothing like bad reviews to crater tourism.

DO you feel like you were manipulated by the union? The union have no right to tell you how or even to suggest to you how to vote.

That would be abuse of power and by using your working time abuse of your right to work and be proud of delivering your service to Bermudians.

You vote how you want to, its is your right, not theirs. Don’t be bullied or press ganged into anything.
