FDM Reaffirms Support For Taxi Industry
The Free Democratic Movement [FDM] said they “reaffirm its unwavering support for Bermuda’s taxi industry, recognizing its vital role in the island’s economy, tourism, and daily life.”
A spokesperson said, “Despite being the backbone of transportation for both residents and visitors, taxi operators continue to be overlooked and undervalued by the current government.
“FDM stands in full alignment with the Bermuda Taxi Operators Association [BTOA] and is committed to advancing practical, industry-led solutions that put decision- making power back into the hands of those who know the business best. Among the key concerns raised by the BTOA are the need for 150 temporary licenses during peak seasons, the implementation of a centralized dispatch system, and an increase in seating capacity. These are not extravagant demands but simple, reasonable requests that would enhance service efficiency and benefit both drivers and passengers.”
“The taxi industry isn’t just asking for change—they’ve done the work and presented real solutions,” said Shalleya Codrington, FDM Candidate for Constituency 36. “The BTOA initially put forward 31 key points, refining them down to eight critical areas that address their major concerns. But despite their diligence, they have been ignored. The FDM believes they deserve more. They should have control over their own regulations and be empowered to manage their own industry.”
The spokesperson said, “The challenges facing the taxi industry extend beyond government neglect. The rise of ride-share companies using private vehicles is undermining licensed taxi operators, while high service fees from platforms like Hitch and Island Taxi are burdening both drivers and customers. Meanwhile, many taxi drivers continue to operate without access to essential benefits like health insurance.
“The FDM supports a regulatory model that grants the BTOA greater autonomy, allowing it to self-regulate just as other professional industries do. In line with this vision, the BTOA has already taken steps to modernize by developing its own app, a move that FDM fully supports and intends to champion.”
“The people who live and breathe this business every day know what works and what doesn’t,” Codrington continued. “They shouldn’t have to wait on government decisions that don’t prioritize them. It’s time for real change.”
The spokesperson said, “The Free Democratic Movement is taking a firm stand with the taxi industry. FDM is committed to supporting industry-led solutions over restrictive government control, ensuring that Bermuda’s taxi drivers are empowered, protected, and given the respect they deserve.”
