Bar Gala Celebrates Excellence In Law

The Department of Public Prosecutions and the Bermuda Bar Association hosted the Criminal Bar Gala on Saturday, March 1st at the Hamilton Princess Hotel.

A Government spokesperson said, “This event celebrated excellence in the legal profession and recognised Bermuda’s legal practitioners’ commitment to upholding justice.

“The evening brought together judiciary members, prosecutors, defence counsel, and senior counsel of the Attorney General’s Chambers, fostering camaraderie and highlighting the legal profession’s role in maintaining the rule of law.

“Justice Juan Wolffe, who served as Master of Ceremonies, set the tone for the evening, emphasising the dedication of legal practitioners.”

In his remarks, he stated, “Our Judges, Magistrates, Prosecutors and Defence Counsel are the most compassionate and brilliant amongst the entire legal system.

“We have consciously chosen to selflessly assist those who may not be able to assist themselves, and we have made it our career ambitions to fervently advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. We are the true guardians of justice.”

Director of Public Prosecutions, Cindy Clarke, underscored the importance of the event in recognising the tireless efforts of those in the legal profession.

“Pursuing justice requires skill, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to fairness.

“The Criminal Bar Gala provides a well-deserved moment to reflect on the impact of legal professionals in Bermuda. Prosecutors play a fundamental role in upholding the rule of law, ensuring justice is administered without fear or favour.

“Defence counsel play an equally important role—you are required to protect the constitutional rights of your clients, whilst ensuring a fair justice system. This event is a testament to us: the exceptional individuals who serve this profession with integrity and excellence.”

Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Senator Kim Wilkerson commented: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all those celebrated at this year’s Criminal Bar Gala.

“Bermuda’s Criminal Bar, though small in size, plays a mighty role in ensuring fairness and justice for all. Their dedication to upholding the rule of law is invaluable, and I commend each and every practitioner for their service.”

“The legal profession remains a cornerstone of justice in Bermuda, and I strongly encourage aspiring lawyers to consider a career in law. I am especially thrilled to see the distinguished Elizabeth Christopher receive the Career Achievement Award.

“Her dedication and contribution to the legal profession have been extraordinary, and this recognition by the Bermuda Bar and her peers is both well-earned and well-deserved.”

The spokesperson said, “The evening was a resounding success, filled with memorable moments and a shared appreciation for the profession’s contributions to the Island’s justice system.

“It should be noted that others who addressed those in attendance included Ms Cindy Clarke [Director of Public Prosecutions], Mrs Shante Simons-Fox [Acting Senior Crown Counsel], Mr Larry Mussenden [Chief Justice], Justice Alan Richards, Ms Susan Mulligan [Senior Legal Aid Counsel], Mr Michael Scott, JP [longest-serving member of the Criminal Bar], members of the Magistracy, and members of the Criminal Bar.

“Five former Attorneys-General, two former Chief Justices, and Ms Shakira Dill-Francois [Solicitor General] were also in attendance.”
