The 2025 Bodhidharma Zenji Ryu Shiai was held this weekend, showcasing incredible talent, fierce competition, and inspiring performances.
A spokesperson said, “This year’s competition, hosted by Shotocup in partnership with the Bermuda Karate Federation [BKF], once again solidified the Shiai as one of Bermuda’s premier karate events.
Talia Iris Retains Her Title
“For the second year in a row, Talia Iris emerged as the overall champion, once again proving why she is one of Bermuda’s most dominant karatekas. With precise technique and powerful execution, she defended her Black Belt Kata title against a stacked division, further cementing her legacy in the local martial arts scene.
Breakout Performances & Rising Stars
“The event wasn’t just about returning champions. Several up-and-coming athletes made their mark, demonstrating the bright future of Bermuda’s karate talent.
“Inara Todd delivered a standout Kata performance that captivated the audience, showcasing exceptional focus and execution. Her precision and timing demonstrated a maturity beyond her years, marking her as an athlete to watch in future competitions.
“Ava Simons secured gold in the Under 15 Novice Female Kata category, impressing the judges with her clean techniques and strong stances. Her final score of 6.4 reflected the quality of her performance.
“Vincent Lightbourne took home gold in the Under 15 Novice Male Kata, narrowly edging out his competitors with a final score of 6.23.
Exciting Divisions and Unforgettable Moments
“The Under 15 Advanced Male Kata division was one of the most anticipated events of the day, with Tobiah Goodchild claiming the top spot, followed by Dylan Flanagan and Oidin Flanagan, both securing podium finishes.
“The Under 10 Intermediate Male Kata category saw fierce competition as well, with emerging talents stepping up and putting on remarkable performances.
“The Shiai also featured Black Belt and Intermediate Kobudo divisions, highlighting the traditional weapons skills of Bermuda’s karate practitioners.

“The Bodhidharma Zenji Ryu Shiai continues to be a platform for both experienced martial artists and rising talents to test their skills, gain experience, and showcase the discipline and dedication that defines karate.”
“This event is about more than competition—it’s about growth, perseverance, and community,” said Shotocup Director Edmond Johnson. “Seeing young athletes like Inara Todd and Ava Simons step up and deliver such strong performances is a testament to the continued development of martial arts in Bermuda.”
