St. George’s To Host UNESCO World Poetry Day
The Corporation of St. George’s is hosting Bermuda’s observance of UNESCO World Poetry Day 2025 in the Town of St. George, Bermuda, on Monday, March 24th.
A spokesperson said, “The Corporation has supported this educational and heritage event for many years and welcomes the public to participate in this national celebration.”
Town Manager Candy-Lee Foggo states, “Bermuda has been fortunate to be part of the global family of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With that international perspective, we join in celebrating the power of poetry in every community.
“Across cultures, poetry takes many forms—rooted in African traditions through oral storytelling and song, woven into European literary heritage, and echoed in the rhythms of rap and reggae, where words carry deep messages of reflection and social consciousness. Through these diverse expressions, poetry allows us to share ideas, imagination, pain, love, peace, and admiration.
“For Bermuda’s 2025 World Poetry Day, we embrace the theme: ‘A Treasure for Tomorrow: Celebrating 25 Years of Our World Heritage Site Status.’ This milestone reminds us of the stories, voices, and creative expressions that connect our past with our future.”
The spokesperson said, “Bermuda’s World Poetry Day will take place at King’s Square in the Town of St. George, featuring area schools and a guest poet reciting their works for an audience of town residents and dignitaries.
“The Corporation has made it a priority to include area primary schools, ensuring their participation in a program that fosters cultural awareness and historical appreciation. Through this initiative, students learn about local history, and by presenting their ideas and understanding through public expression, they contribute to a deeper community awareness of different perspectives.
“The public is encouraged to attend during their lunch hour to enjoy the performances and support the young poets and guest artists who will be sharing their work. The event will be livestreamed by Bernews.
“The Corporation of St. George’s thanks our community sponsors: Churchill’s, White Horse Restaurant, Tobacco Bay, Dowling’s Gas Station, Saltwater Jewellry, Wahoo’s Bistro & Patio, Boho Couture and Robertson’s Drug Store.”
Town Manager Foggo added, “For us, World Poetry Day highlights community members who not only have a deep appreciation for town history but also showcase future aspirations in the arts. Their expressed pride in their town and desire to be recognized as emerging artists may shape the future of St. George.”
