Escape from Devils Isle has submitted a planning application for a proposed Zipline Adventure Course in Southlands Park.

A document submitted with the application stated, “We would like to emphasize that, EDI Bermuda LLC has ensured that all of our intended Zip Line Courses do not interfere with any of the established walking trails throughout Southlands Park, allowing the general public continued enjoyment of the Park as intended.

“We will be offering four [4] separate zip lines to accommodate everyone. Each course route contains varying degrees of difficulty and is focused to match the age range. Every adventure will be either accompanied by or supervised by a member of our ACCT certified trained and accredited guide staff. Each staff member must go through a 240 hour accreditation to become certified as a Level 1 Guide.

“Our courses will include a Canopy Tour, a Challenge Course, for Confidence Building for all age levels, and an adrenaline pumping duel super zip line for those adventure seekers. The easy courses are designed to engage the patron in a variety of ways. ‘Canopy’ means that you are in and amongst the trees either being guided or free to explore on your own as while enjoying each traverse and the nature around you.

“To ensure we are not being invasive as we build the 4 Zip Line courses throughout Southlands Park, we are constructing each element of these 4 courses using only utility poles and platforms built amongst the trees. These are all non-permanent structures which are also noninvasive.

It adds, “Bermuda is the only major cruise and tourism destination that does not offer a single zip line adventure. Locating the Escape from Devils Isle within the historic 37 acres of Southlands Park provides the ultimate canvas. This one of a kind zip line park experience is geared to Bermuda’s unique ecosystem and will be built in a sustainable manner that preserves the ecology and history of this unique location.

“Once operational, the “Escape from Devil’s Isle” Canopy Zip Line Park will provide 24 full and part time jobs, giving the opportunity for year round employment in an exciting outdoor career field.”

Can we not be the place that says no to every single thing??!
as long as it is safe and secure, let’s go!!!

Southlands is supposed to be a preservation of Bermuda’s natural beauty, not a place for entrepreneurs to make a dollar.

I have no issue with the Zipline business, but I do have an issue with commercial businesses being run in a nature reserve.

Totally agree. Southlands is a public park for the use of the public. Public land is not to be used for commercial gain other than a concessionaire operating a small part of the park, such as a cafe, or in the case of Southlands, a campground operated on contract and only needing a small portion of the park.

The zipline venture covers the whole park meaning that nowhere will be spared the noise of the zipline carriage on the steel cables.

I have always loved Southlands, and try to visit as often as possible. The parks dept have done such a great job of making this area unforgettable in the last year or so :)

I’ve seen the signs for the proposed zipline. It makes me sad. Not because that ziplines aren’t fun, of course they are. But this is a small island. Southlands is one of the last (very few) wild places in BDA that is mostly off the tourist radar. And with the recent improvements, it really has become a national treasure. It is such a special place. I really wish we could keep it that way, rather than to turn it into a theme park.

“turn it into a theme park”

Please do NOT give the PLP Government such ideas!
