World Poetry Day An ‘Incredible Event’
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Local students have been praised for their impressive literary talents at the recent annual UNESCO World Poetry Day celebration in King’s Square, St George’s.
Young poets from four schools – St George’s Prep, East End Primary, Francis Patton Primary, and St David’s Primary – took centre stage, performing original works inspired by this year’s theme: A Treasure for Tomorrow: Celebrating 25 Years of Our World Heritage Site Status.
Their verses reflected a deep appreciation for the historic town and its cultural significance.
Adding to the event’s artistic atmosphere, acclaimed local poet June Caisey shared some of her own work, offering the students a powerful example of creative expression.
Rennika Denbrook, operations and logistics coordinator for the Corporation of St George’s, said she was impressed by the quality of the students’ poems.
“We had people from the local business community, residents, and vistors show up to support the event,” Ms Denbrook told Bernews. “They very much enjoyed the day.
“The students did much better than I would have done as a kid. It takes guts to get up before all those people and perform.
“None of the students seemed nervous. They came with the energy, vibes, and had fun.”
She added: “A huge thank you to our sponsors. This was the first year we had sponsors on board. It really helped the event become a success.
“We could also give the students some lunch donated by our community sponsors. It was an incredible event.”
