Retail Sales Decreased 0.2% In January 2025
After adjusting for the retail sales rate of inflation – measured at 2.2% in January – the overall volume of retail sales index decreased 0.2% when compared to January 2024, according to the recently released Retail Sales Index.
A Government spokesperson said, “Today, the Ministry of Economy and Labour released the January 2025 Retail Sales Index publication.
“January’s volume of retail sales index decreased 0.2 per cent compared to last year. In value terms, retail sales increased at an estimated $101.8 million.

“Five of the seven sectors recorded year-over-year volume index decreases in January 2025:
- Motor Vehicle Stores’ sales volume decreased 12.7 per cent.
- Service Stations’ sales volume fell 6.9 per cent.
- The sales volume for Building Material Stores decreased 14.5 per cent.
- The sales volume at Apparel Stores decreased 6.5 per cent.
- Sales volume decreased 6.3 per cent in the All-Other Store Types sector [comprising stores selling household items, furniture, appliances, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and tourist-related goods].
“The following two sectors had decreases in sales volume compared to the previous year:
- The sales volume for Food Stores grew 12.7 per cent.
- The Liquor Stores’ sales volume grew 4.7 per cent.
“Selected overseas declarations increased 5.4 per cent compared to January 2024.”
