Southampton Parish Council Activities

The Southampton Parish Council recently hosted community events including school reading visits, a public meeting on gardening, an Easter Egg Hunt, a business breakfast, and launched its 2025 scholarship application.

A spokesperson said, “The last 3 months have been active for Southampton Parish Council. On the 6th March, Members read to Pre School students at Southampton Pre-School, and P1 Students at Port Royal and Dalton E. Tucker Primary Schools; each student was also given a book to keep. On the 20th March we held a Public Meeting for Residents; on 12th April we held our Annual Easter Egg Hunt for Southampton’s children; last Thursday the 6th June, we treated Southampton’s Business Owners to Breakfast at Henry VII Restaurant; and our 2025 Scholarship Application is now available.

Public Meeting

“The meeting was held at Port Royal School, and Council Member [CM] Greg Wilson captivated the audience with his extensive knowledge of sustainable and home-based gardening, composting, and agriculture. CM Wilson is active throughout Bermuda and supports several schools whose students have planted vegetable gardens. The relationships with school-students sees CM Wilson sharing his expertise and wisdom, and students sharing enthusiasm and pride in planting, nurturing, and reaping results from their own hands.

Easter Egg Hunt

“Led by Council Members Lisa Spurling and Sabrina Kirby, the Council hid over 700 Easter Eggs throughout Whale Bay Park on an unusual Saturday in April. A serious thunderstorm bringing torrential rain drenched Bermuda overnight into the morning. The rain was so relentless that a lake formed in the middle of the Park by 10:00am! Undaunted, Members hoped the weather would clear in time for the Hunt and it did…the lake even evaporated.

“Although the grass was slightly wet, at 2:30 children between the ages of 2 and 10years old descended on the Park. The Egg Hunters were well-dressed, some in ponchos and rain boots. Pens, pencils, toys, games, rings, and eggs filled with candy, were hidden in palm tree leaves, crevices in walls, and in tall grass. In what seemed a matter of minutes, the treasures were found and discovered.

Business Breakfast

“Every other year Council invites business owners to buffet breakfast where there’s a short address or panel discussion. This year Owners shared business cards, ideas, and networked. Former Council Member Craig Simons hosted a panel of men raised in Southampton who recalled stories about Port Royal golf course, marbles, fishing, ranging races, summer hotel jobs, neighbourhood vs. neighbourhood 6-a-side football games, cricket, and making and flying giant kites at Evans Bay.

Scholarship

“The Council is grateful for the generous sponsors of our 2024 Golf Tournament whose generosity allowed us to double our Scholarship Fund and support even more students and families. We anticipate another year of excellent Applicants…Bermuda’s and Southampton’s future is bright!”
