New Community Garden On Boaz Island

October 25, 2025 | 0 Comments

A new community garden has taken root on Boaz Island, giving residents the chance to grow their own vegetables, plants, and flowers while strengthening neighbourhood ties.

The project offers free garden plots for members, who will maintain their own spaces at no cost.

The garden co-ordinator Shalleya Codrington hopes the initiative will encourage residents to connect, share gardening advice, and enjoy the benefits of fresh, homegrown produce.

“I’ve always wanted to do something like this in the community,” Codrington told Bernews.

“I reached out to BLDC [Bermuda Land Development Company] and submitted a proposal.

“They sent me some options, and I selected a piece of land on Boaz Island.”

Ms Codrington said there are 18 people signed up with plots with many others expressing an interest.

“People can grow whatever they feel like as long as it’s legal – potatoes, pumpkins, squash, kale, lettuce and carrots,” she said.

“I do want to reserve a section for me to grow a variety of vegetables that I can bag up and provide to people who may want fresh food, vegetables, but don’t have the opportunity to come out and grow it themselves.”

Ms Codrington also said she plans to donate plots to the Sandys Parish schools – Somerset Primary, West End Primary and Sandys Middle School – so students can learn how to grow food.

“I want this to be a community space where we can come together and learn from each other,” she added.

Anyone interested in reserving a plot can scan the QR code on the promotional flyer to access the registration form.

Volunteers willing to assist in preparing the garden site are invited to contact Ms Codrington at 704-0564 or by email at shalleya.codrington@gmail.com.
