Footballer Danté Leverock said he remains available for national team duty, reflecting on the island’s historic run to the final round of the Concacaf World Cup qualifiers and the growing gap in resources between Bermuda and their regional rivals.

Speaking on the Bernews News and Views Podcast, Leverock also discussed his proudest moments in a national team jersey and his coaching ambitions.

Bermuda finished fourth in group B of the final qualifying round, ending their campaign on a high note with a 2-2 draw away to Trinidad and Tobago.

“You never go into a match looking to lose, so we’re disappointed with some results more than others,” Leverock said.

“However, we did show glimpses of potential.

“Hopefully, people are proud of us making the final round, which has never been done before.”

The 33-year-old highlighted the fundamental difference in resources and structure between Bermuda and their regional rivals, who successfully recruit players with heritage ties from major European leagues.

“Hundred per cent of our opponent’s players [in group B] were playing in a pro-environment, and I’m not talking the minor leagues, I’m talking the Premier League, the Eredivisie, the MLS,” the defender said.

“You can feel the difference in speed, physicality, endurance, mental capacity, and game management.

“Credit to the boys for making it to this round – it was a different level.

“We were up against some high-level players. You must remember a lot of these countries are naturalising players who have played for England Under-21 and Netherlands Under-21 and giving them passports.

“This is the reality for the Concacaf region.”

Leverock, who briefly stepped away from international football in 2021, said he has not retired from Bermuda duty and remains open to selection.

“I’m very close with the coaching staff and boys, but I have some realities I must evaluate,” he said.

“If I’m called upon in any capacity, I’m always willing to help.”

Although the Dandy Town man has no intention of hanging up his boots yet, he has already begun his coaching journey after launching the DaRock Elite Academy for young boys and girls in 2023.

“The academy has given me purpose,” he added. “I’m enjoying passing on experience and expertise to the children.

“I’m just trying to give them the tools to succeed.”
