The Bermuda Airport Authority [BAA] announced the successful recruitment, training, and certification of four Bermudians — Hannah Fletcher, Dejon Robinson, X-onna Lowe-Stevens, and Nakiiah Robinson-Baker — as newly qualified Air Traffic Control Specialists.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Airport Authority [BAA] is pleased to announce the successful recruitment, training, and certification of four Bermudians as newly qualified Air Traffic Control Specialists. Today, the Minister of Tourism and Transport, Culture & Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, met in person with the new employees at the Air Traffic Control Tower to congratulate them on their achievement.”

Minister Darrell commented, “I am extremely proud to see four Bermudians successfully complete one of the most demanding training programmes in the aviation sector. This milestone supports the Government’s commitment to workforce development and strengthening Bermuda’s aviation infrastructure.”

The spokesperson said, “In 2024, BAA conducted a rigorous recruitment process to identify suitable Bermudians for this safety-critical profession. More than 100 applicants were assessed through academic testing, psychological and physical evaluations, and structured interviews.

“Following the selection process, Hannah Fletcher, Dejon Robinson, X-onna Lowe-Stevens, and Nakiiah Robinson-Baker emerged as the top candidates and were sent to Global ATS in Cheltenham, England, an internationally recognised air traffic services training center.

“Training was delivered in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organization [ICAO] syllabus and included aviation law, air traffic management, air navigation, meteorology, aircraft performance, human factors, and ATC licensing requirements. The program concluded with advanced aerodrome control instruction and intensive simulator-based practical training.

“The trainees returned to Bermuda in June 2025 and completed six months of on-the-job training focused on local airspace and operational procedures. To qualify for licensing, each candidate was required to achieve a minimum pass mark of 85% in both theoretical and practical examinations. All four were subsequently recommended for licensing by the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority.”

BAA Chief Executive Lester Nelson commented, “Air Traffic Control is a safety-critical profession that demands the highest standards of competence and judgement, and he commended the new air traffic controllers for their outstanding accomplishment.”

The spokesperson said, “The newly qualified Air Traffic Control Specialists have now assumed full-time positions and are working alongside senior controllers in the Bermuda Air Traffic Control Tower. The Bermuda Airport Authority congratulates the new controllers and wishes them every success as they begin their professional careers.”
